Full Checklist: What 2025 KCSE Candidates Must Have Ahead of KUCCPS Placement

Out of the over 993,000 candidates who sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, 270,715 qualified for university after scoring C+ or higher.

The release of the results earlier in January cleared the way for the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to commence the process of placing students in their preferred schools.

Placement is a structured process that requires learners to meet certain criteria before applying.

KUCCPS is responsible for placing KCSE candidates into degree, diploma, craft certificate, and artisan programs in public and selected private institutions.

Placement is conducted online through the KUCCPS Student Portal and is based on KCSE performance, minimum entry requirements, and available slots.

What Learners Need for KUCCPS Placement

Mandatory Academic Details

Every learner intending to apply must have their KCSE index number and the year they sat the examination.

These are required to access the portal at students.kuccps.net.

The initial login password is either the KCPE index number or the birth certificate number used during KCSE registration.

Candidates who fail to access the portal are advised to confirm their details with their former school or the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

Minimum KCSE Grade Requirements

KUCCPS has set minimum KCSE scores for admission to various post‑secondary programs.

Eligibility is based on the candidate’s mean grade and the subject requirements for specific courses.

For Degree programs, applicants must have attained a minimum mean grade of C+ (plus).

In addition, candidates must meet subject cluster requirements prescribed for each degree course.

For diploma programs, applicants must have scored at least a mean grade of C− (minus).

Some diploma courses, particularly in teacher training and health sciences, may require higher grades or specific subject passes.

For Craft Certificate Programs, applicants must have attained a minimum mean grade of D (plain) at KCSE.

For learners who scored a mean of E at KCSE, Artisan Certificate Programs are available under the KUCCPS placement.

KUCCPS advises candidates to check individual programme requirements on the student portal, as some courses have additional subject‑specific conditions beyond the minimum mean grade.

Personal & Contact Information (Must Be Ready)

Learners are required to prepare accurate personal information before submitting their applications.

This includes an active mobile phone number and a valid email address, which KUCCPS uses to communicate placement results and admission instructions.

Applicants must also provide the contact details of a parent or guardian, the county of origin, and the constituency.

Course Selection Preparation

Before selecting on the KUCCPS portal, KCSE candidates are required to thoroughly prepare to avoid errors that may affect placement outcomes.

Learners must first identify the programme codes for all intended courses.

KUCCPS only accepts applications submitted using the official seven‑digit programme codes listed on the student portal.

Programme names are not accepted, and incorrect codes may result in placement in unintended courses or disqualification from consideration.

Candidates are expected to confirm that they meet the minimum mean grade and subject requirements for each selected course.

While the portal automatically displays eligibility, applicants are advised to independently verify subject cluster requirements, particularly for competitive courses such as medicine, engineering, education, law, nursing, and architecture.

Learners should review previous cut‑off points published on the KUCCPS portal for guidance.

Although cut‑off points change each year depending on competition and available slots, they provide an indication of the likelihood of securing a place at a particular course or institution.

Applying for programs where previous cut‑off points are close to or below a candidate’s cluster weight improves chances of placement.

Number of Choices Allowed

KCSE candidates applying for degree courses are allowed to make up to six choices.
These include:

• First Choice (1a, 1b, 1c): the same degree course selected in three different universities
• Second, Third, and Fourth Choices: alternative degree courses or institutions

This structure allows candidates to compete for the same programme across multiple institutions while also listing other options in case they miss their preferred course.

Applicants for diploma courses may select up to 4 choices.

These choices can span different institutions offering the same or related programs, and placement is based on merit and the availability of slots.

KCSE candidates applying for craft certificate (Level 5) courses are allowed to make up to four choices.

These programs are mainly offered in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Applicants targeting artisan certificate (Level 4) programs are also permitted to make up to four choices.

Application and Revision Fees

KUCCPS requires applicants to pay prescribed, non‑refundable fees when submitting course choices or making revisions on the student portal, and payment is mandatory for an application to be processed.

KCSE candidates making a first‑time application for placement into degree, diploma, craft certificate or artisan programs are required to pay Ksh1,500.

The fee applies to all program categories and is paid once per application cycle.

An application submitted without successful payment is not considered for placement.

Candidates who wish to change or revise their course choices during the official revision window must pay a revision fee of KSh 1,000.

The revision option is intended for applicants who were not placed in their preferred programs or who choose to adjust their selections based on availability and competition.

All KUCCPS payments are made via M‑Pesa using the official KUCCPS payment details provided on the student portal.
