The German Embassy in Nairobi has invited Kenyan students to apply for fully funded Master’s degree scholarships under the DAAD Study Scholarships for STEM Disciplines programme.
The programme is designed for high-achieving graduates from developing and emerging countries who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and engineering at state or state-recognised universities in Germany.
According to DAAD guidelines, the scholarship supports full-time, on-campus and tuition-free Master’s degree programmes.
DAAD Opens Applications for STEM Master’s Scholarships in Germany
Only programmes beginning in the Winter Semester 2027/28 are eligible, and studies that include compulsory stays outside Germany are excluded. Interdisciplinary courses are allowed only if they have a clear STEM focus.
Funding is provided for a minimum of 10 months and up to 24 months, depending on the standard duration of the selected Master’s programme. Applicants must clearly indicate the full scholarship period in their application.

Scholarship Benefits
Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of 992 euros (Ksh 148,000) to cover living expenses.
Other scholarship benefits include health, accident, and personal liability insurance coverage, an annual study allowance of 460 euros (Ksh 96,000), and a travel allowance upon application.
Further support may be granted after the start of the programme, including a monthly rent subsidy and an allowance for accompanying family members under specific conditions.
In cases of disability or chronic illness, additional funding may be considered to cover necessary costs incurred while studying in Germany. The programme also offers reimbursement for carbon offset payments on air travel.
To support language preparation, DAAD may fund German or English language courses depending on the chosen programme.
This includes online language courses after the scholarship award, in-country preparatory German courses before the start of studies, and reimbursement for recognized language proficiency tests such as TestDaF or DSH.

Application Requirements and How to Apply
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree recognized in Germany by the application deadline.
They must also have graduated within the last six years and must not have resided in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application.
Candidates who already hold a Master’s degree are not eligible.
A minimum of B1 language proficiency in the language of instruction is required at the time of application. Accepted tests include IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English, TestDaF, Goethe-Zertifikat, and others depending on whether the programme is taught in English or German.

The selection process will be highly competitive and will only consider complete applications. Candidates will first undergo a pre-selection stage based on academic performance, language skills, internships and relevant work experience.
Shortlisted applicants will then be invited for interviews conducted by an independent academic panel, either virtually or in person.
Key selection criteria include academic excellence, quality and relevance of the proposed study project, integration of the programme into the applicant’s career path, and future professional prospects.
Extracurricular engagement and social contribution will also be taken into account.
