Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang has announced that mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for learners.

Speaking to KTN PS Kipsang confirmed that in the new Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) maths will no longer be compulsory unlike in the 8-4-4 education system.

However, students must take English or Kenya Sign Language, Kiswahili, Physical Education, and Community Service Learning as mandatory subjects.

“This will affect learners transitioning to senior school when they return to school in their second term,” he said

PS Kipsang on how Learners will Choose Career Pathways

“We are giving them time to go home so that parents and learners can consult on what they wish to pursue. The selection process will begin immediately when they return to school,” he said.

Students will be tasked with choosing other subjects from 38 other academic subjects to shape their career pathways.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education proposed that during grade 9 placement, there will be a limiting number to a maximum of 5 learners who will be placed in the same school.

Dr Kipsang argued that this will promote and encourage diversity.

STEM Education Model

The Ministry of Education rolled out the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education as an applied and inter-disciplinary curriculum.

Consequently, students will choose from three major academic pathways, which will include, Computer science, engineering and the sciences
