Grade 9 learners have started selecting their preferred senior schools for Grade 10, with the Ministry of Education reducing the number of schools each learner can choose from: 12 to eight.

The five-day exercise is being conducted through the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) portal, with about 1.2 million learners expected to participate in the selection process.

Learners must select their preferred career pathways, subject combinations, and senior schools as they prepare for the transition to senior school under the Competency-Based Education system.

Learners Now Limited to Eight Senior Schools

According to the Directorate of Secondary Education (DSE), the selection exercise will run for five days, allowing learners to make their choices before the portal closes.

“The system will open at midnight on Monday with selection running from Monday, September 7 to Friday, September 11,” the DSE said in a statement following a meeting with field officers.

Under the new selection formula, each learner will choose eight preferred senior schools distributed across four school clusters. The choices will comprise three schools from Cluster 1, two from Cluster 2, two from Cluster 3 and one from Cluster 4.

The new arrangement reduces the previous selection exercise, when learners could select 12 senior schools, with four choices allocated to each of the three pathways.

Learners must select at least one and up to two major learning areas, linked to their preferred career pathway and the subject combinations available at senior school level.

Three pathways available for Grade 10

Senior school education is organised around three main pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science.

The Arts and Sports Science pathway includes tracks covering areas such as fine arts, music, dance, sports and recreation.

Learners will make their selections based on their interests, career aspirations and the subject combinations offered by their preferred schools.

The selection exercise is initially focused on public senior schools, while private schools are expected to participate during the revision stage of the placement process.

Once the selection is completed, learner profiles will be printed, and parents will be required to sign the documents to confirm the choices made. Schools will retain signed copies for record purposes.

Senior school learners will study seven subjects. Mathematics, English, Kiswahili and Community Service Learning will be compulsory, while the remaining subjects will depend on the selected pathway and subject combination.

The Grade 10 placement process will take place after the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment results, with learners expected to transition to senior school in January.

Placement will consider learners’ school preferences, career interests, academic performance, cumulative assessments from Grades 6, 7, and 9, and their KJSEA results.
