Kanga High School is a national boys-only school located in Rongo, Migori County. The school was founded in 1985 by the late powerful former Internal Security Permanent Secretary, Hezekiah Oyugi.
The first batch of students, about 15 in number, were admitted even before the physical school structures were ready.
During this period, they were hosted at St Joseph’s Secondary School, Rapogi — a school that would later become Kanga’s fierce academic and sporting rival.
In early 1986, Kanga High finally relocated to its permanent home. The pioneer class played a key role in shaping the school’s identity, including choosing the school uniform.
Kanga High School history
The first principal, the late Joram Ayoo, arrived in 1986, having been sourced from Starehe Boys’ Centre.

The school’s reputation continued to grow. In 1988, Kanga High ranked sixth nationally in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) exams.
Throughout the late 1980s, the school’s popularity surged further after strong performances in national competitions, including French contests.
Over the years, the school expanded rapidly. By 1987, new dormitories, including Oyugi and Alpha, were completed, teacher’s quarters were built, and the Academic Square with the presidential dais and the now-famous “Kanga Highway” took shape.
In 2012, Kanga High School was elevated to national school status, further strengthening its place among the country’s top academic institutions.

School Fees
The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay. Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
Kanga High School was placed in Cluster One (I), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.
However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
