The Open University of Kenya (OUK) – the country’s inaugural fully-fledged e-learning university, has invited applications for admission for the 2023/2024 academic year.
Notably, the Open University is a public university in Kenya which provides open distance, and flexible learning opportunities to Kenyan citizens and beyond.
The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
In a statement the institution, through its Vice Chancellor Professor Elijah Omwega outlined the requirements for eligibility of the program.
Virtual University Undergraduate programs
The following undergraduate programs are currently accepting applications:
- Bachelor of Data Science
- Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics
- Bachelor of Business and Entrepreneurship
- Bachelor of Economics and Statistics
- Bachelor of Technology Education

Minimum entry requirements for undergraduate programs
For one to be eligible for the undergraduate programs at the Virtual University, they should have a mean grade of C+ and above in KCSE or equivalent or a Diploma or professional qualification from recognized institutions.
Further, the university accepts offers from special groups of people who do not necessarily have the above qualification.
The institution would also accept a KCSE certificate or equivalent and foundational certificate or bridging course from recognized institutions to admit the students.
in addition, one may have a Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education with a minimum of One principal and subsidiary pass.
For those who are determined to learn, they should have an evidence of KCSE certificate or equivalent and a portfolio for recognition of prior learning determination with respect to workplace training of 2 years’ work experience in a relevant field of 2 years, two short courses lasting at least 3 months each in relevant fields, or any other qualification that may be determined by Senate recognizing prior learning leading to equivalent of the identified criteria, experience and skills of a learner.
Also, one with a bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by the Senate is eligible.

Postgraduate diploma programmes
Moreover, the institution is receiving applications for the Postgraduate courses in Diploma in Leadership and Accountability and postgraduate Diploma in Learning Design and Technology.
The entry requirement for postgraduate diploma programmes is a bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by the Commission for University Education (CUE).
Application guidelines
Prospective students with KCSE qualification should submit their applications online through the KUCCPS Portal https://uk.kuceps.net.
For the Special groups named above and are interested in the bachelor’s programs and postgraduate programmes they should apply through http://admieni.
Also, International students from the region as well as abroad are encouraged to apply.
Application fee
No application fee will be charged for those seeking admission to the Open University of Kenya in the academic year 2023/2024.
In addition, learners at the Open University of Kenya are eligible for government scholarships and loans.
Mama Mboga University
President William Ruto Wednesday, August 3, awarded a charter to the Open University of Kenya (OUK).
During the event, the Head of State noted that the facility will provide learning opportunities to ordinary Kenyans including ‘mama mboga’, matatu operators and farmers, among others.
Further, Ruto named Equity CEO James Mwangi as OUK’S Chancellor and Prof Ezra Maritim as the Council Chair.
