The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has scheduled a pilot study to evaluate the upcoming Grade 9 summative assessment.
This study will be administered to current Grade 8 and pre-vocational learners from Monday, July 15, to Friday July 19.
The pilot is aimed at assessing the feasibility of the proposed national assessment and verify the validity and reliability of the test instruments and other essential procedures.
This trial run is a crucial step in ensuring a smooth and effective implementation of the Grade 9 assessment planned for 2025.
“The purpose of the pilot study is to determine the feasibility of the proposed national assessment and identify the validity and reliability of the test instruments and other critical procedures,” a statement from KNEC read.

The pilot study is part of the larger Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework introduced in 2017. The CBC emphasizes practical skills over rote learning, and the Grade 9 assessment is designed to align with this educational shift.

The results of the pilot study will help KNEC refine the assessment process, ensuring it accurately measures the competencies outlined in the CBC.
In preparation for the pilot, KNEC has collaborated with various stakeholders in the sector including teachers, curriculum developers, and assessment experts.
Training sessions have been conducted to equip educators with the necessary skills to administer the pilot tests effectively. Additionally, KNEC has developed comprehensive guidelines to ensure standardized administration across all participating schools.
Transition to CBC
This pilot study represents a significant move in the transition from the 8-4-4 education system to the CBC.

This shows KNEC’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education in Kenya by implementing assessments that better reflect students’ skills and knowledge.
Feedback from the pilot will be analyzed to make any necessary adjustments before the full rollout of the Grade 9 assessment in 2025.
This process aims to address potential challenges and ensure the assessment is fair, comprehensive, and conducive to the new curriculum’s goals.
Parents and educators have been urged to support the pilot study, as their cooperation is vital to its success.
