The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service has explained why it did not release placement results for diploma students alongside the 2026/2027 university placement results, saying admissions to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions are now conducted continuously.
Speaking during the release of the 2026/2027 placement results, KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Agnes Wahome said this year’s announcement focused on university applicants because applications and placements for TVET programmes no longer follow a single annual placement exercise.
“Today, we are focusing on those who applied to universities because, for the TVET category, we have had continuous application, continuous placement, and therefore we did not have a major exercise as we have done in previous years,” Wahome said.
She explained that applications and placements to TVET institutions are now conducted throughout the year, eliminating the need for a single nationwide placement exercise as was the case in previous years.
The placement agency has, in the past, said that the continuous admission model is part of the government’s efforts to increase enrolment in TVET institutions, with multiple application windows opened every year to give students more opportunities to secure places.
KUCCPS noted that TVET plays a key role in the government’s agenda to create jobs, reduce poverty, and support economic growth by producing skilled workers in sectors such as manufacturing, affordable housing, agriculture, and healthcare.
The clarification comes as KUCCPS announced that 293,869 applicants were placed across universities and other tertiary institutions, including 28,246 students admitted to programmes offered by the Kenya Medical Training College, 500 to the Diploma in Law (Paralegal Studies) programme at the Kenya School of Law, 765 to Kenya Utalii College and 875 to secondary teacher training colleges.
202,133 students have secured places in degree programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year.
KUCCPS said 980,535 candidates who sat the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination were eligible to apply for placement.
Of these, 268,729 attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ and above, qualifying for degree programmes, while the rest were eligible for diploma, certificate and artisan courses in TVET institutions and other tertiary colleges.

TVET Placement Criteria
TVET placement is based on merit, with applicants required to meet the minimum admission requirements set by the relevant regulatory authorities for their preferred programmes.
In allocating available slots, several factors are considered, including an applicant’s programme preference, the year they sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination—with priority given to the immediate cohort—and academic performance.
The selection process also considers the pseudo weight, which is derived from the raw grade points in the required subject combinations where applicable, the Mandatory Subject Combination score (the total raw grade points for the three compulsory KCSE subjects), and the candidate’s Aggregate Grade Points (AGP).
Affirmative action is also applied for applicants under the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) category, provided they meet the minimum subject requirements for their chosen programmes.

Applicant Eligibility
The Placement Service places students for TVET programmes to public TVET institutions including Technical Training Institutes, Technical and Vocational Centres and National Polytechnics registered as members of KUCCPS.
Placement to TVET programmes is merit-based, taking into account an applicant’s course preference, KCSE examination year, subject performance and aggregate grade.
Priority is given to the immediate KCSE cohort, although applications remain open to Kenyan citizens who sat KCSE from 1994 onwards.
For admission, candidates with a C or C- qualify for diploma programmes, those with D+ or D qualify for craft certificate courses, while students with D- and below are eligible for artisan programmes.
