Litein Boys High School is a public extra-county boys’ secondary school located in Kericho County. The institution was founded in the 1930s by the African Inland Mission Church. It began as a premise for disadvantaged women in the Nandi community as well as a training venue.
The government, in 1962, however, converted the institution into an intermediate learning center and two years later into a secondary school, providing Kenya Junior Secondary Certificate (KJSC) examinations up to the Form Two level.
Its first form four candidates sat for the Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) in 1968, and they were also the first group of students to live in the school as boarding students. Their dormitory was a small block located next to the school field, currently serving as staff quarters.
The ‘A’ level stream at Litein Boys High School was phased out in 1989 when Kenya’s education system changed to the 8-4-4 system.
Since then, admissions to the school have been based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination. This was, however, replaced in 2023 by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework. Former students who went through the school include Kericho Governor Eric Mutai.

Litein Boys High School is currently a five-stream top-performing school. Over the years, the learning institution has consistently achieved good results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) national examinations.
More than 300 students are admitted to the institution each year based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with the Ministry of Education’s policy.
September 2025 strike
In September 2025, a wave of student unrest led to the indefinite closure of the institution following violent demonstrations that resulted in extensive property damage.
The chaos saw key facilities—including the administration block, laboratories, and classroom windowpanes—damaged or completely destroyed. Students reportedly went on a rampage, setting classrooms on fire, vandalizing offices, and wreaking havoc across the compound.
Sources indicate the protests were triggered by allegations of high-handedness by the school principal. The situation escalated quickly, with dormitories and offices set ablaze, CCTV cameras vandalized, and even dairy animals dragged around the school grounds throughout the night.

The classroom walls were scorched, bearing the marks of arson. One of the school’s three buses was found several meters from its parking bay, with its windows and windscreen smashed.
Police confirmed the arrest of eight students found in possession of items allegedly stolen from staff members.
School fees
The government has previously issued a directive to all institutions regarding the total fees parents should pay per year.
The total annual fees per student at Litein Boys are approximately Ksh40,535, which serves as the fee cap set by the Ministry of Education for extra-county schools in Kenya.
However, the actual fees may differ slightly from one school to another due to extra charges imposed by individual institutions for items such as uniforms, motivational programs, or co-curricular activities. Some schools charge parents/guardians a high annual fee of Ksh60,000.
