Thousands of teachers have resigned from the Teachers Service Commision (TSC) to take better-paying jobs abroad.
The educators signed contracts to go to the UK and United States of America to help fill a shortage of 400,000 teachers in the two countries.
According to them, the salaries expected in the foreign nations which are in six figures, are much better than what they were earning from TSC.
Further, while addressing the press, some of the teachers said delayed promotions from TSC, is one of the reasons leading to the mass exodus.
Others complained that their current salaries only cover basic needs like shelter, food and school fees for their children.

Subsequently, Silvia Wanjiru a special needs teacher highlighted the lack of infrastructure and the need for further education for promotions as a major challenge.
“Before, we were getting promotions on merit, then it stopped. We were directed that if one needs a promotion, he/she must go back to class,” she stated.

Peter Ruhiri, a representative of Persuar International jobs placement consultancy revealed that most countries have been struggling with teachers’ shortage since the COVID 19 pandemic.
“There are still many opportunities available, and I have received numerous requests from teachers looking for better job opportunities,” Ruhiri noted.
The teachers further called on the government to streamline the education systems so as to reduce the number of teachers going abroad.
Fired Teachers Reemployed
Meanwhile, on June 27, 2024, the Teachers Service Commission revealed that they would rehire 742 JSS teachers who were previously fired.
Nancy Macharia, the TSC CEO, shared this news at the 47th Annual Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association meeting in Mombasa.
Macharia mentioned that the teachers who had been fired for striking recently would need to go through a specific process to get their jobs back.

She encouraged these teachers to appeal the decision, especially those who had gone on strike to demand permanent employment with pensions after a court ruling.
Likewise, Macharia mentioned that they were working on offering permanent and pensionable jobs to JSS intern teachers in public schools.
Additionally, Macharia said that TSC planned to promote more teachers after the government allocated Ksh1 billion for this purpose.
