Lugulu Girls High School is a national girls’ boarding secondary school located in Bungoma County, Western Kenya. It operates under the sponsorship of a religious organization and is categorized as an ordinary public secondary institution.
The learning institution currently has a student enrollment of over 1,000 students and a teaching staff of more than 50.
Lugulu Girls was established in 1969 and has grown steadily over the years to earn its place among Kenya’s prestigious national schools. Its excellent academic performance and strong traditions have cemented its status as a leading institution for girls’ education.
In the early 1980s, the school embraced the government’s cost-sharing policy, which brought together state support and parental involvement in capital development.
A major step in governance came with the formation of the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) on July 12, 1979. The P.T.A. was officially registered with the Attorney General’s office in October of the same year and has played a vital role in steering the school’s progress ever since.
Enrollment at Lugulu Girls High School has witnessed a consistent upward trend. In the late 1930s, the school had an enrollment of only 35 students.
This number rose to 150 in the 1940s and 500 in the 1950s. By the 1960s, the population had increased to 650 students. In the 1970s, enrollment rose again to about 700.
The 1980s and 1990s recorded student populations ranging between 800 and 850. Today, the school proudly serves over 1,000 students, a testament to its continued growth and demand.
Lugulu Girls High School KCSE performance
The first cohort under Kenya’s newly adopted 8-4-4 education system sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination in 1989, replacing the previous system.
Since then, the institution has been admitting candidates who sat the national high school entrance examination, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
The last KCPE was, however, administered in 2023 after it was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Lugulu Girls has, over the years, continued to record impressive performances in the KCSE national examinations, featuring among the top 500 countrywide.
In the 2024 KCSE exams, 672 out of the school’s 676 candidates secured C+ and above, qualifying them for university entry.
The school’s Principal, Dinah Cheruiyot, stated that the 2024 class posted an impressive 9.3417 mean score compared to 9.3306 in 2023.
Lugulu girls had a total of 13 students achieving an A plain out of the 1,693 recorded nationwide. The school recorded 93 students with an A-, 191 with a B+, and 232 with a B.

School Fees
The government has previously issued a directive to all institutions regarding the total fees parents should pay per year.
As per the Ministry of Education guidelines issued in 2020, national schools in Kenya were categorized into four clusters.
Lugulu Girls falls under Cluster One (I), with an official annual fee ceiling of approximately Ksh75,798 per student.
However, this fee may vary slightly depending on the school’s additional levies, which may cover school uniforms, motivational programs, co-curricular activities, and institutional development projects.
These costs are subject to approval by the Board of Management in accordance with ministry policies.
