President William Ruto has appointed Dr. John Mosonik as the new Chancellor of Rongo University for a five-year term.
In a gazette notice dated January 16, 2026, published under the Universities Act, 2012, the appointment was formalized, making Dr. Mosonik the head of the public university.
Dr. Mosonik assumes the role of Catherine Wangeci, the acting chancellor of Rongo University.
“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint—JOHN KIPNGETICH M OSONIK (DR.) (ENG.) to be the Chancellor of the Rongo University, for a period of five (5) years, with effect from the 16th January 2026,” read the gazette notice.

Role of John Mosonik as Chancellor of Rongo University
Under this role, Mosonik will be the titular head of the university and shall, in the name of the University, confer degrees and grant diplomas, certificates, and other awards of the University.
A chancellor also has the leave to recommend a visitation to the Education Cabinet Secretary and give advice to the Council.
Dr. Mosonik’s Education Background
John Mosonik graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Telecommunication.
He holds a PhD in Business Administration (Strategic Management) from Moi University.
Mosonik also holds a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Strategic Leadership from Northcentral University in the United States.
He also holds Postgraduate Degrees in Digital Transformation, Strategic Focus, Finance, and Business Administration from renowned international universities.
Mosonik is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (FIEK) and a registered member of the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).

Career Background
An astute technocrat with executive experience in both public and private-sector administration, he has 35 years of experience.
From 2018 to 2022, he served as Principal Secretary in the State Department for Infrastructure and as Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining.
In 2023, he was appointed by Safaricom as a non-executive director on the board, effective August 23, 2023, a position he currently holds.
On 4th December 2025, Mosonik was elected to join the KenGen board as a new director.
