St. Patrick’s Iten Boys High School in Elgeyo Marakwet County has been closed indefinitely.
According to Keiyo North Sub-County Director of Education Alice Sitienei, the move follows an incident of student unrest.
The students went on a rampage on Tuesday, July 15, after reportedly refusing to sit for this term’s examinations.
During the protest, they allegedly destroyed school property, forcing the administration to send all learners home.
However, it is unclear what specifically triggered the students’ resistance to the exams. The Sub-County Director has assured parents that investigations are underway.

When will St. Patrick’s Iten be Reopened?
Education officials have not provided a timeline for reopening the school, saying it will depend on the findings and recommendations made after the ongoing assessment.
No injuries have been reported so far, but the extent of the damage to school property is yet to be determined.
St. Patrick’s Iten, Elgeyo is a renowned boys’ secondary school with a strong Catholic tradition.
However, it is infamous for its history of academic and athletic excellence, especially in long-distance running.
Founded in 1961 by the Patrician Brothers of Ireland and local leaders, the school has produced numerous top athletes and is a well-known destination for sports tours.

Lari Boys Closed
The news comes days after Lari Boys High School was shut down indefinitely after a fire on the night of Saturday, July 14.
The fire, which razed key sections of the institution, including the administration block, several classrooms, and the school library, was suspected to have been started by students.
The administration noted that the students were protesting the school’s decision to deny them access to musical instruments, according to school officials.
In response to the incident, the administration sent all students home as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
Authorities are yet to determine the full extent of the damage or when the school might reopen.
