Tenwek Boys High School is a national boys’ secondary school located in Bomet County. The learning institution was started in 1945 by the World Gospel missionaries as an intermediate school and is currently under the sponsorship of the African Gospel Church (AGC).
The school was converted to a secondary school and admitted the first boys in 1961, with the first principal being E. Gilger, who headed the school until 1968.
Among notable alumni of Tenwek Boys who went through the school when it was intermediate are the late Samwel Cheruiyot Langat (Former Kenya Literature Bureau Director).
Other old boys include the late Dr. Bishop Rono (Bishop AGC Kenya), the late Kipkalya Kones (former Cabinet Minister), the late Ambassador John Koech, former Cabinet Minister Frankline Bett, and State House Deputy Chief of Staff, former Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok.
The learning institution was elevated to national school status owing to its growth both physically and academically.
Over 450 students are admitted to the school annually based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
Tenwek Boys High School Performance
Until 2023, admissions at the institution were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
However, this was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.
Tenwek Boys has, over the years, consistently upheld a strong academic record and remarkable achievements in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
In the 2024 KCSE, the school presented 536 candidates, with over 91% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
1 student attained the coveted grade of A (plain). An additional 34 candidates scored an A-, while 81 achieved a B+.

Further down the grade spectrum, the school recorded 146 students with a B grade and 133 who earned a B-.
Also, 93 candidates obtained a C+, 37 scored a C, and 9 managed a C-. Overall, the 2024 class achieved a mean score of 8.411.
In the 2023 KCSE, candidates registered with the school achieved a mean score of 9.3.
School Fees
The government had earlier set a directive specifying the maximum yearly school fees that parents are expected to pay.
As part of the Ministry of Education’s 2020 guidelines, Kenya’s 103 national schools were divided into four clusters.
Tenwek Boys was categorized under Cluster Two (II), which places the official annual fee limit at around Ksh75,798 per student.

The actual amount paid may, however, differ slightly between schools due to extra charges imposed by individual institutions for items like school uniforms, motivation programs, and co-curricular activities.
