Celebrations over the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results have continued across the country, with families, schools, and students who braved challenges in their four-year academic journey coming out to praise God and share the joy.
This comes after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on January 9, 2025, released the official results of the KCSE 2024 examinations.
In Nyeri County, 18-year-old Danson Baragu who has battled cancer since 2022 was celebrated at the oncology department of the Nyeri County Referral Hospital after scoring an A- of 77 points.
Oncology nurses and cancer patients at the facility joined Baragu’s family to celebrate his success after registering impressive results at the Baricho Boys High School.
The teenager has for close to 2 years seen the walls of the hospital’s oncology department after he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2022 as he began his second year of secondary education.
The diagnoses put him out of class for that year and close to half of the third year as he underwent treatment.
“That was the most painful thing because they had to drill into my bone get that bone marrow inside was so painful. The medicine that I was taking pained me a lot when they were going through the veins, so I also had to undergo another surgery to install a chemo port in my chest,” he revealed.

Danson recounts how the chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions took a toll on him as his peers continued learning.

When he got the green light to resume his studies, the teenager said he had to work twice as hard to catch up with his peers with the national examination fast approaching, adding that his A- great achievement did not come as a shocker.
“I had to wake up at three. You could meet just two students, three students in the class who would try to make me understand some things that I had missed previously and came out of sacrifice and hard work because waking up at 3:00 am and sleeping at 12.00 wasn’t a joke,” he said.
The Nyeri County Referral Hospital oncology department said it organized a small party for Baragu’s family just to celebrate and inspire others out there that there is life after cancer diagnosis.
Having beaten cancer, Danson is determined to pursue oncology and treat those suffering from the disease as he seeks to take his place in the medical world.
2024 KCSE results
Baragu was among the 7,743 students who scored a mean grade of A- in the 2024 KCSE.
His school, Baricho Boys High School in Kirinyaga County, recorded 30 As, 110 A-, 108 B+, and a mean score of 9.4.
CS Ogamba while announcing the results disclosed that 246,391 obtained university entry level C+ and above a 25.53 percent compared to 201,133 (22.27 percent.) the previous year.
