Rosemary Litunya is a professional architect who is making waves in the Building/Construction sector that is usually male dominated.

Litunya has eight years of experience in Architectural project design, Sustainable and Environment friendly design.

She is the director of Buxton Build Architects, a company she started in 2021 after obtaining her certification as a registered architect.

In an exclusive interview with The Kenya Times, Rosemary recounted the origin of her interest in architecture which dates back to her high school days.

“When I did my fourth form, I used to have a lady friend who was a prefect, and she talked to me about her mum who was an architect and I thought wow, this is a good field. Other people thought I should be a doctor because I met the requirement, but I love construction,” she said.

Litunya Describes why She Chose Buidling/Construction Over Medicine

Rosemary’s architecture dream started at Technical University of Kenya (TUK) where she recounted being the only lady in a class of 18 when she joined.

However, that didn’t stop her as she had deep passion for her work in construction and finds great satisfaction in the creative and deliberate nature of the field.

“I love construction because, as I keep telling my clients and the public that unlike medicine, we don’t have emergencies in construction, and I have all the time to create, and I create buildings that last years,” she said.

However, she is also aware of the significant responsibilities that come with her profession

“…. but the setback is that in as much as there are no emergencies and all, now i would compare it to medicine again. If you make a mistake in medicine, it goes to the grave, if you make a mistake in construction, it’ll look at you for 100 years, cause houses last up to more than a hundred years,” Rosemary noted.
