Biography
Martin Deric Wambugu alias Ngunjiri Wambugu is a politician who is currently serving as a political advisor to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
His appointment came this year after spending some time in political obscurity, following his loss of the Nyeri Town Constituency seat to his rival Duncan Mathenge of the United Democratic Alliance Party (UDA), who garnered 41,111 votes compared to Wambugu’s 11,808 votes.
Life in Politics
Wambugu made his first entry into elective politics in the 2017 general election under the Jubilee party ticket and managed to defeat the incumbent at that time Esther Murugi.
Wambugu garnered over 17,517 votes against Murugi’s 11,143.
He led his Nyeri Town constituents from 2017 to 2022.
During his tenure as Nyeri town MP, Ngunjiri served as a member of the Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security in the National Assembly.
Before joining the Jubilee Party coalition, the former Nyeri Town MP served as the Director of Political Affairs at the Orange Democratic Movement Party (ODM) in the run-up to the 2013 general elections.
During that period, he also worked on the presidential campaign team of the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), fronted by ODM leader Raila Odinga as president and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as his running mate.
After being part of Raila Odinga’s presidential campaign team for 11 months, Ngunjiri left ODM in March 2013 after the general elections and later decamped to the Jubilee Party coalition.
At the height of the rivalry between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his then deputy William Ruto, Ngunjiri orchestrated the “Kieleweke” wing that supported Uhuru against Ruto’s “Tangatanga.”
