Alarm is mounting among international observers after President Donald Trump issued a series of early morning messages sharply criticizing French leadership, signaling rising tensions between Washington and its European allies.
In the Truth Social posts, Trump appeared to single out Emmanuel Macron over France’s stance on the ongoing Iran conflict, accusing the country of failing to support U.S. efforts in the region.
Europe has refused to support US military operations against Iran, with several countries blocking American aircraft and equipment requests. Italy, Spain and Poland have taken direct steps to limit their involvement in the conflict that began in late February.
European Allies Refuse Support
The US and Israel launched strikes on Iranian leadership, nuclear sites and missile programmes at the end of February. Since then, the US has asked European nations for help with bases, airspace and defence systems.
Italy denied a US bomber permission to land at Sigonella air base in Sicily after the request came while the plane was already in flight. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stated that Italy is not considering war with Iran and that any use of Italian bases requires government approval.
Spain closed its airspace to US planes involved in the Iran operations. Defence Minister Margarita Robles said the country does not authorise bases or airspace for actions related to the war in Iran.

Poland rejected a reported US request to send Patriot missile batteries, with Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirming they are needed to protect Polish skies and NATO’s eastern flank.
Trump Lashes Out at UK and France
President Donald Trump posted messages on Truth Social criticising European partners. In one post about the UK he wrote:
“All of those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT.”
In a separate post about France he said the country would not let planes with military supplies fly over its territory to Israel and added: “The U.S.A. will REMEMBER!!!”

France has not confirmed a formal ban on US warplanes but President Emmanuel Macron earlier called the strikes “outside of international law”.
Why this matters
The refusals by key NATO members have left the US more isolated in its military campaign. European nations cite concerns over international law and the risk of wider involvement in the conflict.
This split has increased pressure on global oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz and strained relations between the US and its traditional allies in Europe.
The public exchanges between Trump and European leaders show a clear break in coordination on a major security issue.
