Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced that students from select universities will be denied medical internship placements due to non-compliance with professional training standards.
Speaking on August 1 during the commissioning of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Burnt Forest Campus in Uasin Gishu County, Duale named eight institutions that failed to meet the required criteria.
“I am going to write a very serious letter to these eight universities, led by a very notorious university called Baraton,” said Duale.

“We will deny them their students’ licenses and internships,” he added.
The universities mentioned included:
- Baraton University
- Kenyatta University
- Daystar University
- Kirinyaga University
- Kisii University
- Meru University of Science and Technology, among others.
Duale warns shortcuts in medical training
According to Duale, the Ministry is acting to protect the integrity of the health sector by ensuring that only properly trained students are licensed and placed for internships.
“We must run this country fairly, justly, and in accordance with the law,” said CS Aden Duale.
He warned that shortcuts in medical training will no longer be tolerated and urged institutions to comply with the standards set by regulatory bodies such as the Nursing Council of Kenya.

The newly launched KMTC Burnt Forest Campus is expected to improve access to health education in the region and contribute to the equitable distribution of health workers across the country.
This follows the CS’s previous revocation of internship placements for 306 BSc Nursing pre-interns across several universities in Kenya.
Duale revokes nurses internships
According to the Ministry, the move follows the discovery that the individuals were not qualified for the posting, having not yet graduated at the time of assignment.
Further, the news comes amidst an ongoing audit into the 2025/2026 cohort of nursing internship placements.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Health Aden Duale confirmed that the affected pre-interns were among the 2,098 individuals initially posted on July 1, 2025.
The Ministry noted that it had already revoked internship offers for 42 individuals on July 21, making the total number of cancellations 348 so far.

“Following a review of the 2,098 pre-interns posted on 1st July 2025, the Ministry has established that 306 individuals were not qualified for internship posting, as they had not yet graduated,” he said.
“The posting offers for these 306 BSc Nurses have been revoked, in addition to the 42 previously revoked on 21st July 2025. All affected internship centres have been duly notified,” the notice read in part,” Duale confirmed.
On the other hand, the investigation also identified 316 pre-interns who had met all eligibility criteria but were omitted from the initial placement list.
