IPOA Asks Kenyans to Share Videos & Photos of Rogue Cops; How to Share

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has called on the public to share any videos or photos they may have of incidents during the recent protests in the country.

The demonstrations, sparked by opposition to the Finance Bill 2024, have seen violent clashes between police and protesters, resulting in significant casualties and property damage.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 2, IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori announced that the Authority has launched investigations into 39 deaths, 150 serious injuries, and seven abductions that occurred during the protests.

To expedite their investigations, IPOA has appealed to citizens who may have witnessed any of the incidents to come forward with any videographic or photographic evidence.

“To hasten progress on investigations, the Authority appeals to the members of the public who may have witnessed any of the above and other related incidents across the country and have in their possession videographic or photographic materials to share through https://forms’/atyrL593UmyVx1WFA,” IPOA said in a statement.

IPOA is also examining the destruction of both private and public property, including key landmarks such as the National Assembly, Supreme Court building, City Hall, and various private businesses.

The protests have drawn widespread attention, not only for the political issues at their core but also for the way police have managed the unrest.

“This follows a rigorous monitoring exercise on how the police conducted themselves while undertaking public order management during the protests,” the statement read.

To further facilitate communication, the IPOA has provided multiple contact points across the country, including toll-free numbers and regional office contacts in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Meru, Eldoret, Garissa, Kisumu, Kakamega, and Nyeri.

Statement on Deployment of KDF

The deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in support of the National Police Service (NPS) during the protests is also under scrutiny.

IPOA will oversee the KDF’s actions in accordance with Article 241(3)(b) of the Constitution of Kenya and Sections 33, 34, and 35 of the KDF Act.

IPOA’s role in ensuring accountability extends to prosecuting any officers found culpable.

“The arrests and arraignment in Court of suspect police officers is subject to conclusion of investigations and forwarding of the Authority’s recommendations to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as provided by Section 7(1)(a)(ix) of the IPOA Act,” the statement further stated.

In the statement, the authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining independence, impartiality, and fairness in its investigations.

“IPOA assures Kenyans and the police of its commitment to continue monitoring and documenting how the police conduct themselves during these and future demonstrations in line with its mandate,” IPOA affirmed.
