The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced temporary job opportunities ahead of the February 26, 2026, by-elections, offering daily pay of up to Ksh2,000.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, January 21, the commission said it is recruiting voter registration clerks and poll officials to serve during the upcoming by-elections in Isiolo, Embu and Kakamega counties.
“We are hiring! The Commission invites qualified applicants to apply for the following temporary positions for the #26thFebByelections.”
The available positions include Support Electoral Trainers (SETs), Presiding Officers, Deputy Presiding Officers, and Polling/Counting Clerks.
According to IEBC, SETs will assist in training presiding officers, deputy presiding officers and clerks. Their work will focus on polling, counting, and tallying procedures. SETs will also help prepare training venues, distribute materials, compile training report,s and support returning officers during electoral training.
Applicants for the SET position must be Kenyan citizens of high integrity and non-partisan. They must hold a degree or diploma from a recognised institution, be computer literate, and demonstrate proven training skills.
Also, applicants must be residents of the constituency or ward they apply for and be available for the entire exercise. Successful SETs will be paid Ksh2,000 per day.
IEBC announces vacancies for Presiding and Deputy Presiding Officers
Presiding Officers and Deputy Presiding Officers, on the other hand, will be responsible for managing polling stations during the by-elections.
Their duties include setting up polling stations, supervising polling activities, ensuring proper use of the KIEMS kits, maintaining law and order, overseeing vote counting, and transmitting results to tallying centres.
Presiding Officers will also be responsible for posting results at polling stations and delivering official results to constituency returning officers. Deputy Presiding Officers will assist in performing these duties as assigned.

Applicants for these roles must be Kenyan citizens of high integrity and non-partisan. They must hold a diploma or degree, be computer-literate, and have strong communication and report-writing skills.
Applicants must also demonstrate the ability to manage people, sensitive data and election materials. Residency in the constituency or ward applied for is mandatory. Presiding Officers will earn Ksh2,000 per day, while Deputy Presiding Officers will be paid Ksh1,800 per day.
Polling/Counting Clerks
Polling and Counting Clerks will support operations at polling stations. Their duties include setting up polling stations, controlling queues, guiding voters, verifying voter identity, issuing ballot papers, and assisting with sorting and counting votes after polling closes.
To qualify, applicants must be Kenyan citizens of good character and non-partisan. They must have a KCSE mean grade of C- and above, be residents of the constituency or ward applied for and be available for the entire period of the exercise. Successful clerks will be paid Ksh1,000 per day.
IEBC directed all interested applicants to submit their applications online through its recruitment portal at jobs.iebc.or.ke. The deadline for all applications is Monday, January 26, 2026.
The temporary recruitment follows IEBC’s decision to conduct by-elections in several electoral areas after vacancies were declared.
According to separate Gazette notices dated December 18 and December 19, 2025, IEBC officially set February 26, 2026, as the polling date and appointed Returning and Deputy Returning Officers to oversee the by-elections.

The Isiolo South parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the area MP Mohamed Tubi Bidu in November 2025.

In Embu County, the Muminji and Evurore ward seats fell vacant after the sitting Members of County Assembly resigned earlier in the year to contest the November 2025 Mbeere North parliamentary by-election, which they lost. In Kakamega County, the by-election will be held in West Kabras ward.
IEBC said the by-elections in Muminji, Evurore, and West Kabras wards will be conducted using the Register of Voters published on June 21, 2022. The commission also announced that registration and revision of the register of voters in Isiolo South Constituency have been suspended until March 30, 2026.
Public officers intending to contest in the by-elections have been reminded that they are required to resign within seven days of the declaration of a vacancy, in line with the Elections Act. The Commission will be undertaking registration and nomination of candidates for the by-elections on January 22 and 23, 2026.
