The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the vacancy for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) as the term of the current boss Nancy Macharia comes to an end.
In a notice dated Tuesday, May 6, the TSC invited qualified candidates to apply for the position.

“The Teachers Service Commission is an Independent Constitutional Commission established under Article 237 (1) of the Constitution of Kenya (2010), with the mandate to manage teacher functions as prescribed in the Teachers Service Act No. 212.
Pursuant to Article 250 (12) of the Constitution and Section 16 (1) of the Act, the Commission is seeking applications for the role of Secretary/Chief Executive Officer. The CEO will be accountable to the Commission while performing the functions and duties of the office,” the notice stated.

Duties and Responsibilities of TSC CEO
According to the TSC, the duties and responsibilities of the CEO include:
(a) Being the head of the secretariat;

(b) Acting as the Accounting Officer of the Commission;
(c) Serving as the custodian of all records of the Commission; and
(d) Being responsible for:
i) Executing decisions made by the Commission;
ii) Assigning duties to and supervising staff of the Commission;
iii) Facilitating, coordinating, and ensuring the execution of the Commission’s mandate;
iv) Ensuring staff compliance with public ethics and values;
v) Properly implementing Part IV of the Act; and
vi) Performing additional duties as assigned by the Commission under the Act or any other written law.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience for the CEO Position
To be eligible to apply for the CEO position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Be a citizen of Kenya;
- Hold a degree in education from a university recognized in Kenya;
- Have at least ten years of experience in education, administration and management, public administration, human resources, or financial management;
- Meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

The TSC stated that the CEO/Secretary will serve a term of five years but will be eligible for reappointment for one additional term of five years. Compensation and benefits for this position will adhere to the guidelines issued by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

Interested candidates should download the application form from the TSC website (www.tsc.go.ke), fill it out, and submit it, along with a detailed curriculum vitae, certified copies of their National Identity Card or Passport, relevant academic and professional certificates, and testimonials.
The application form is also available electronically through the application portal at www.tsc.go.ke for online applicants.
Applications and supporting documents may be:
I) Submitted online via the application portal using the link https://www.recruitment.
II) Submitted as a PDF file attachment via email to chairperson2025@tsc.go.ke.
III) Hand-delivered during official working hours in a sealed envelope clearly marked at the top right corner: “Application for the post of Secretary/Chief Executive Officer,” to the office of the Commission Chairman, Teachers Service Commission, TSC House, 3rd Floor, Tower Wing, Kilimanjaro Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi.
Applications must be received by Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. (East African Time).
Additionally, applicants are required to submit copies of clearance certificates from the following bodies:
– Kenya Revenue Authority
– Higher Education Loans Board
– Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission
– Directorate of Criminal Investigations
– A recognized Credit Reference Bureau
Furthermore, the names of all applicants and the interview schedule for those shortlisted will be published in the print media and on the Commission’s website at www.tsc.go.ke following the conclusion of the advertisement and shortlisting process.
Nancy Macharia Profile
Dr. Macharia was appointed as TSC boss in 2015 for a renewable term of five years with her term which expired in 2020 being extended by another five years.
The TSC chief executive who is a trained teacher was born in the Central region of Kenya. She pursued her basic-level training in the same region before joining Kenyatta University (KU) for her higher education.
At KU, Dr Macharia graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree in English/Literature in 1987 after which she was immediately posted at Kahuhia Girls’ Secondary in Murang’a County where she taught for five years.

The TSC boss was then promoted to the rank of deputy head teacher at Kianderi Girls’ Secondary in Murang’a County.
Macharia, upon her exit as a practicing teacher, joined TSC as a staffing officer where she rose through the ranks to the current post.
She succeeded the then-long-serving TSC boss, Gabriel Lengoibon.
