After Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted to remove their Speaker on Thursday, October 24, Nyamira County has declared the position vacant.
The County Assembly Speaker, Enock Okero, was impeached just two years after assuming the role.
In a notice on Friday, October 25, the Clerk of Nyamira County Assembly invited interested candidates to apply for the vacancy.
“Article 178 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 as read together with Section 9 A (1) of the County Government Act, 2012 provides that each County Assembly shall have a Speaker who shall be elected by that County Assembly in accordance with the Standing Orders, from among persons who are qualified to be elected as members of County Assembly but are not such members” read part of the notice.
“In light of the above, interested people who qualify for the position are therefore invited to submit their nomination papers for election to the Office of Speaker of the County Assembly of Nyamira.”
How to Apply for Nyamira County Speaker Position
Interested candidates can collect nomination papers (in-person by interested people) from the Office of the Clerk of the Nyamira County Assembly.
Applicants can collect their nomination papers between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from Friday, October 25, 2024, to Sunday, October 27, 2024.
As per the notice, candidates must return the nomination papers to the Office of the Clerk by Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at 9:00 a.m.

Requirements to Attach on Nomination Papers
Interested people should return the completed nomination form together with the following:
- Clearance from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) evidencing the fact that the candidate is qualified to be elected as a Member of the County Assembly under Article 193 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 and the candidate is not such a member.
- A copy of his or her National Identity Card/Passport.
- Two recent colored passport photographs
- A copy of curriculum vitae (CV).
- Copies of the candidate’s academic certificates and other relevant documents in accordance with Article 193 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.

Further to the above, a person who wishes to participate in the election must be nominated by two (2) Members of the Nyamira County Assembly.
The clerk also noted that shortlisted candidates shall be notified of the day and time for election of the Speaker.
Why the Speaker Was Impeached
The 23 out of 34 MCAs present during the session unanimously passed the motion to impeach the Speaker, citing allegations of violating the Constitution of Kenya.
Nyamira County Assembly goes into the devolution history books as the first legislative unit to have sent home two speakers in a span of less than 10 years.
Okero becomes the second speaker to be shown the door after the first assembly impeached pioneer Nyamira County Speaker Peter King’oina.
