Biography
Professor Amukowa Anangwe is a Kenyan scholar and seasoned politician with significant contributions to academia and governance. He is the current chairman of the University of Nairobi Council.
Prof. Anangwe possesses a rich background in the world of Academia. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Nairobi.
Thereafter, he enrolled at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus Rotterdam where obtained a Master of Arts in Public Analysis.
In 1990, he earned his doctorate title upon his completion of his PhD in Political Science and Governance from the University of Manchester, UK.
Political Background of Amukowa Anangwe
His contribution to the field of Political Science as an educator is impossible to ignore. Prof. Anangwe began his teaching career as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi.
He also taught political science at the University of Dodoma, Tanzania, where he served as a Professor of Political Science from December 2008 to April 2023.
Anangwe’s political ambitions began to take shape while he was a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. He quit teaching at the university to focus on politics in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
He first vied for a political seat in 1992 but did not succeed. His breakthrough came in 1997 when he won the seat of Butere Member of Parliament beating Martin Shikuku. He served as an MP between 1997-2002.
He served as minister in Moi’s government
He was thereafter appointed Minister for Co-operative Development and later Minister for Medical Services in President Moi’s government.
He made key achievements as Minister for Medical Services, with the most notable one being forming a task force to explore ways of reducing medicine prices in the country. This exercise was meant to improve access to essential drugs.
After leaving active politics, Anangwe continued to influence public administration and academia. He was appointed as the chairperson of the University of Nairobi Council in May 2023 a position he holds to date.
The UON governing council came to the spotlight under Anangwe’s leadership for suspending the Vice Chancellor Prof Stephen Kiama. In a letter dated October 14, 2024, the council terminated Prof Stephen Kiama’s service for reasons that it did not reveal.
