Biography
Paul Ongili Owino, popularly known as Babu Owino, was born in Nyalenda, Kisumu County in 1989 where he spent most of his childhood.
Contrary to popular belief, ‘Babu Owino’ is Ongili’s real name, as enshrined on his official identification documents.
He earned the nickname ‘Babu’ from his mother and childhood friends, which stuck throughout his life.
Educational Background
Babu is a Kenyan politician and member of parliament for Embakasi East Constituency.
Owino attended Kisumu Township Primary School from 1995 to 2002.
Thereafter, he proceeded to join Kisumu Boys’ Secondary School from 2003 to 2006 where he completed his A levels.
In 2008, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi (UoN) to pursue a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science.
He graduated with First Class Honors in 2012. However, in 2013, he went back to UoN to pursue a degree in Law.
On November 12, 2023, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree, PhD in Political Leadership from Weldios University, Benin.
Life in Politics
Babu rose to prominence after his election as the chairperson of the Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) in 2011, a role he held for almost a decade.
Prior to clinching the Embakasi seat, Babu contested for the Westlands MP seat, which he lost to Tim Wanyonyi.
However, in August 2017, he was elected to parliament for Embakasi East on the ODM ticket.
In 2022, he retained his seat after beating his opponents, Francis Mureithi, Michael Ogada, and Joash Omwenga in the 2022general election.
Out of 234 polling stations, Babu garnered 53, 195 votes against Mureithi’s 26,699.
