Duncan Ojwang is a Kenyan Lawyer and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. On July 21, 2026, President William Ruto nominated Dr. Ojwang to be the Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
The National Assembly approved Dr. Ojwang for appointment as IPOA chairperson on August 19. Ojwang will succeed Ahmed Issack Hassan, who was appointed judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya.
Ojwang was among the shortlisted candidates for the position of a member of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). He appeared before the IEBC Selection Panel chaired by Dr. Nelson Makanda on April 2, 2025
Duncan Ojwang Academic Qualifications
In 2023, Ojwang graduated with a PhD in Law (Law and Policy) from the University of Arizona.
In addition, he holds a Master of Laws Degree in Human Rights and International Law from the University of Indiana, where he graduated in 2011.
Further, in 2008, he earned Juris Doctorate Law from the University of Southern Illinois
He graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from the University of Indiana.
Work Experience
Until January 2023, Dr. Ojwang was a Dean and Senior Lecturer at Africa Nazarene University.
He also worked as a Lecturer at the University of Nairobi from 2014 to 2016.
Duncan Oburu worked as a Legal Support Team Member for the UN Special Rapporteur for Indigenous Peoples under the United Nations Special Rapporteur from 2011 to 2012.
In addition, Ojwang has written opinion pieces for local publications.
He was part of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) process and was among four individuals the Kenya Kwanza Alliance appointed to provide technical assistance in bipartisan talks.
