George Gitonga Murugara is a Kenyan politician serving as a Member of Parliament for Tharaka Constituency, Tharaka Nithi County.
He has been an MP since August 2017 and is affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Before entering politics, he was an advocate and partner at the law firm Hamilton Harrison and Mathews Advocates from 1993 to 2016.

George Murugara Gitonga began his academic journey at Tharaka Primary School, where he earned his Certificate of Primary Education between 1975 and 1981.

Gitonga then attended Kabarak High School, where he achieved his Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) from 1986 to 1987.

Career Path
After completing his legal training, Murugara served as an Advocate and Partner at Hamilton Harrison & Mathews, one of Kenya’s leading law firms, from 1993 to 2016.
He transitioned into politics and was elected Member of Parliament for Tharaka Constituency in August 2017, a position he has held since his re-election in August 2022.
In the 12th Parliament (2017–2022) and continuing into the 13th, he has served as a member on both the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs and the Committee on Delegated Legislation.

As Chair of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, he publicly defended the committee’s integrity in April 2025 amid controversy surrounding the Anti-Money Laundering (Amendment) Bill, firmly denying any impropriety. In early 2025, he also initiated legal action by applying to the Meru High Court, alongside local representatives and constituents, to challenge the creation of new administrative units in his region.
