Biography
Margaret Nyambura was until December 19, 2024, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy. Following a cabinet reshuffle, President William Ruto nominated Nyambura to be Kenya’s Ambassador to Ghana.
President Ruto appointed Dr. Nyambura Ndung’u to replace former CS Eliud Owalo, bringing a fresh and innovative perspective to the Ministry of ICT.
Ndung’u, an information scientist with over 20 years of work experience, was the lead Kenya Partner for Research ICT Africa.
Education
On the other hand, Dr. Margaret Ndung’u has worked on national and regional projects funded by IDRC, World Bank, NEPAD, International Trade Center, and Vodafone, among others, with a keen interest in ICT research.
Similarly, she worked as a consultant at the ICT Authority in the Education Ministry, and as a Senior Research Manager in Gender Justice in Stem Research in Africa (GeJuSTA), prior to her nomination.
Dr. Ndung’u’s academic path includes a Post-Doctorate Fellowship in Innovation Value Chain from Tshwane university of Technology.
Likewise, she has a PhD in information Systems from the University of Nairobi (UoN) having acquired a master’s degree from the same Institution.
Prior to that, she acquired a bachelor’s degree in information science from Moi University.
Margaret Nyambura Experience
The Ministry of ICT CS has immense experience in Internet Governance, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, and Data Governance.
Her professional roles have seen her serve as a Senior Research Manager at the Global Digital Inclusion Partnership and a Senior Regulatory and Internet Governance Expert at the African Union Commission (AUC).
In addition, Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u has hugely contributed to the African Union’s Digital Transformation strategy for education, health, and agriculture sectors.
The CS contributions at the AU extend to the development of the AU Data Policy Framework and educational initiatives across the continent.
Notably, Dr. Nyambura Ndung’u played a key role in coordinating a six-module online Internet Governance curriculum used by 30 national and regional schools across Africa.
She also played a key role in developing a 10-module course for the Pan African University Institute, tailoring it to the e-skills of participants.
