Mwangangi joined Pangani Girls’ High School, where she did her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCPE).
She later joined the University of Nairobi in 2009, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Additionally, she has a master’s degree in health economics and policy from the University of Adelaide in Australia.
Career Background
She joined the Machakos Level 5 Hospital for a one-year internship. Later, she received her first posting in Meru South working under the public health department.
Mercy first volunteered to work unpaid for 18 months in the health ministry while devolution was still taking shape.
While working at the Ministry of Health at 29 years old, she was promoted to head the health financing division, which at the time was struggling to craft operational strategies.
She was part of the team evaluating performance contracts and appraisals for the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

She contributed to the implementation of the Universal Health Coverage Pilot program, which forms part of the Presidential Big Four Agenda.
Additionally, she served as the joint secretary of the Health Benefits Advisory Panel that was commissioned to assist the Essential Health Benefit Package for Kenya.

Mercy Mwangangi was a key figure in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, working alongside the former Cabinet Secretary for Health, Mutahi Kagwe.
Her daily appearance during the pandemic briefings gave her prominence in Kenya by showcasing brilliance and fluency.
