Mumbi Ngugi is a Kenyan Judge. In 2021, she was sworn in as a Court of Appeal judge.

Age and Early Life 

Judge Mumbi as a child faced challenges like any other person living with albinism. However, her resilience and determination made her rise against societal perceptions.  

She has been defiant in her quest to go against the odds. She grew up hearing stories that people living with skin cancer conditions, die before the age of 40 but now she celebrates as she is now more than 50 years of age. 

While growing up, she had to maintain a brave face, especially in crowds. Most of the time, she was the centre of attention due to her skin condition.

It was more frustrating for her, as there was little information about her skin condition therefore making her read books and magazines to learn more about her albinism. 

Mumbi Ngugi’s Educational Background 

Mumbi holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Nairobi. She later went to the Kenya School of Law and graduated with a Diploma in Law. 

She earned a Master of Law Degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science at the University of London. After completing her Diploma course at the Kenya School of Law, she was admitted to the bar in 1988.

She marked the beginning of her flourishing career journey. 

Career Background 

Her career background has been an upward curve that portrays her passion to gain space in the legal profession. 

She was sworn in as the Court of Appeal judge in 2021. Before that, she served as the presiding High Court judge at Milimani High Court, anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division. 

Additionally, she served as a High Court Judge for seven years in the Constitutional and Human Rights Division in Milimani Law Courts between 2011-2016 and also as the presiding Judge at the High Court of Kericho between 2016-2019. 

At the beginning of her career, she worked as a Legal Counsel and Company secretary at the Pioneer General Assurance between 1989-1993 as well as State Counsel at the AG’s chambers in 1989. 

In the bid to scale higher in her career, she was a partner in the Njogu and Ngugi advocates from 1993-2011. 

She was the lead Researcher and Compiler of Biannual Human Rights Reports, and Kenya Human Rights Commission reports. 

She was also a consultant on legal issues concerning the Ministry of Transport in 2010. She was also a long-term columnist on social and legal issues for Kenya’s leading newspapers, the Sunday National and The Standard. 

She has championed and advocated for human rights, especially for women. Having been an instrumental person in the development of human rights jurisprudence in Kenya particularly to the social economic rights that are in the 2010, constitution of Kenya. 

She served as a consultant on the development of the Commonwealth Judicial Bench Book on Violence against Women in East Africa. 

Mumbi has authored over 13 reports that she has presented at various forums. With an experience of 20 years as a legal practitioner in public, private, and civil society.

Positions she holds at the Judiciary 

She holds different capacities in the Judiciary, she is the chairperson of the Judicial Education Sub-Committee of the Africa Judges Forum on HIV/AIDS. 

She is a member of the National Legal Aid Service Board and, in addition, a member of the International Refugee Law of Judges (IARLJ). 

Further, she is a member of the Judiciary Leadership Advisory Committee and Disability Mainstreaming Committee from 2015-2016.  

She was on the committee that dealt with the Sexual Harassment Policy where she served between 2014-2015. 

Achievements and awards 

She has received awards both locally and internationally. She won the award for C.B Madan Prize in 2018. 

She was also a recipient of the Law Society of Kenya Distinguished Service Award in 2015. 

Moreover, the ICJ-Kenya Jurists of the Year Award in 2013 and the Brand Kenya Ambassador Award in the same year. 

She was among the Co-founders of the albinism Foundation East Africa which gained momentum in 2008.
