Biography
Amin Mohammed Ibrahim is the current Director General (DG) of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office in Kenya.
He took office in 2022, following George Kinoti’s resignation and has since been redeployed to the Public Service Commission (PSC).
Mohammed was sworn in after surpassing 9 candidates who were interviewed by the National Police Service for the position.
Shortly after his appointment, the new DCI boss affirmed that he would respect the rule of law while undertaking his mandate.
Amin Mohammed Education
Prior to his appointment as DCI boss, Amin Mohammed was pursuing a Master of Arts Degree in Criminology and Security Management at Egerton University.
Additionally, he holds a degree in Criminology and Security Studies from the same University and a diploma in International Studies from the University of Nairobi.
At the same time, he is a first-class honors certificate graduate from the National Defense College. According to his resume, the DCI boss enjoys reading, sports, training, and leadership outside of work.
Career
The 59-year-old joined the police force as a cadet from Kiganjo Police Training College in 1989. Soon after, he was appointed to head the crime wing of Bungoma Police Station.
Before his appointment, Amin was the Director of the Internal Affairs Unit, mandated to investigate complaints against police.
Thereafter, Amin gradually rose through the ranks, joining the DCI in the early 2000s due to his continued education and outstanding career performance.
Mohammed has previously served in various senior positions, including the head of the DCI Investigations Bureau, head of Operations, and O/C Banking Fraud unit, among other specialized units in the Directorate.
Some of his career achievements as an investigator include investigating former Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza over her threatening to Kill a security guard in 2012.
Amin also investigated and prosecuted the Killers of Luigi Locati, the Italian Bishop who was murdered in 2005.
By 2007, he was the police regional commander of Rift Valley, the scene of the historic tribal clashes.
Other Positions Held and Achievements
Other additional positions held include director for the Kenya National Focal Point on Small and Light weapons. Similarly, he was at one time the head of investigations at DCI and senior superintendent at the Anticorruption Police Unit.
Prior to his appointment as DCI boss, Amin led the internal affairs unit at the National police service and held senior positions at the CID and the Banking Fraud Investigation unit, where he reportedly occupied senior positions.
Upon taking office, Mohammed disbanded the Anti-Counterfeit Unit that had been formed by his predecessor George Kinoti.
Moreover, this move came barely days after he disbanded the Special Service Unit (SSU).
During his swearing-in, he gave out his mobile number for members of the public to easily reach out to him.
