Daniel Maanzo Kitonga, widely known as Dan Maanzo, is a Kenyan politician currently serving as the Senator for Makueni County under the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K) party.

Early life and education

Dan Maanzo was born on December 12, 1971, in Yekanga Village, Makueni County.

He began his primary education at Yekanga Primary School from 1978 to 1984, where he completed his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE).

He then joined Starehe Boys’ Centre & School in 1985, completing his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1992, after seven years of rigorous academic and leadership training.

In 1993, Maanzo was admitted to the University of Nairobi to study law. He pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, graduating in 1998.

The following year, 1999, he enrolled at the Kenya School of Law, where he earned a Diploma in Law, officially qualifying as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Career

Professional career

Daniel Kitonga Maanzo began building his professional career in the legal profession in 1998 when he undertook pupilage at Pheroze Nowrojee & Company Advocates, gaining practical experience in litigation and legal advisory work.

Upon completion, he was retained by the same firm, serving as an associate advocate from 2002 to 2003.

Alongside his legal practice, Maanzo ventured into academia, working as a lecturer at the Kenya Polytechnic (now Technical University of Kenya) between 2001 and 2003, where he taught courses in law and mentored aspiring legal professionals.

Between 2003 and 2005, he was engaged at NARC/Mwenge House as a legal and political consultant, providing legal expertise during a transformative period in Kenya’s political landscape following the transition from the Moi era.

During this time, he also joined Sheth & Wathigo Advocates, where he served as a legal associate from 2003 to 2006, sharpening his skills in legal practice and client representation.

In 2007, Maanzo established Maanzo & Company Advocates, a law firm where he continues to serve as the Senior Partner and Legal Consultant.

His career also extended into public administration when he was appointed as Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports from 2008 to 2009, where he contributed to the formulation and implementation of youth development policies.

He later served as Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperatives Development and Marketing between 2009 and 2012, overseeing programs aimed at strengthening cooperative movements and improving service delivery in the sector.

Political career

Daniel Kitonga Maanzo’s journey into elective politics began in 2013, when he successfully contested the Makueni Constituency parliamentary seat under the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K) party, led by Kalonzo Musyoka.

As a Member of Parliament from 2013 to 2022, Daniel Maanzo was an active legislator, contributing to key policy debates and oversight functions.

During this period, he served on several influential committees, including the Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives, the Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, and the Committee on Delegated Legislation.

In the 2022 general election, Maanzo transitioned to the Senate after successfully vying for the Makueni County Senatorial seat, once again on a Wiper Democratic Movement ticket under the Azimio la Umoja coalition led by Raila Odinga.

He became the second senator to represent Makueni since the establishment of the devolved system of government.

As a senator, Maanzo serves on several powerful committees, including the Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee, the National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration Committee, and the Delegated Legislation Committee.
