Festus Amimo was a veteran radio journalist and media professional who was widely known as the head of Mayienga FM, a Dholuo dialect radio station operated by the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).
At the station, Amimo hosted a popular breakfast talk show, Gary Mokinyi.
On December 7, 2025, Festus Amimo collapsed and died at age 45. This happened shortly after he mourned a friend, Rose Yier, on December 5, 2025. His body was taken to the Nairobi Funeral Home.

Festus Amimo attended Onjiko Boys High School in Kisumu. For his higher education, Amimo studied mass communication at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC).
Additionally, he attended the University of Nairobi and Mount Kenya University.
Amimo’s Career Life
He joined Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) in 2004, starting as a presenter for the Luo Sub-Service in Kisumu before relocating to Nairobi upon the launch of Mayienga FM.

He rose to the Head of the Mayienga FM, where he hosted the popular morning show Gari Mokinyi for over 15 years with his signature baritone voice, incisive interviews, and community-focused content.
Amimo chaired the Jofwambo Welfare Association (Luo Journalists Association), mentoring young reporters and fostering professional networks. Known as “Wuod Awasi,” he was celebrated for his warmth, dedication, and off-air support, such as securing job opportunities for listeners.
He is credited with mentoring new reporters and organizing support groups.

Death and Legacy
Amimo, aged 45, died suddenly on December 7, 2025, just days after celebrating his birthday.
His body was taken to Nairobi City Mortuary, and detectives from Nairobi Central Police Station are investigating the circumstances, including potential health factors.
Official tributes from KBC and leaders like Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who visited his widow Rose, described his death as a profound loss to the Kenyan media, with his death sparking a widespread mourning in the media fraternity.
His legacy endures through the voices he mentored at Mayienga FM and his role in preserving Luo cultural narratives.
