Wahome Thuku is a Kenyan lawyer, journalist, teacher, and political commentator.
Thuku has emerged as one of the most recognizable independent online political commentators, discussing governance, law, and politics, particularly within the Mt. Kenya region.
Further, the lawyer is known for his detailed social media posts and political analysis through his writings and commentary, becoming a trusted source of interpretation on issues ranging from constitutional law and public policy to electoral politics and social affairs.
According to the lawyer, the freedom of the press and online reporting has evolved despite government intervention.
Speaking during an interview with KTN after an arrest in 2015 following a publication that was termed defamatory by the former Mukurwe-ini MP Kabando wa Kabando, the journalist clarified that despite the defamation allegation, he was charged with misuse of telecommunications.
“Many years back, the treatment of journalists in the country was brutal, but now we have very good laws,” Wahome Thuku explained on the changes in handling journalists in the country.
Early Life and Educational Background
Wahome was born and raised in Othaya Constituency in Nyeri County.
For his secondary education, Wahome joined Kiangoma Secondary School in Mukurwe-ini.
In 1992, while still a student, Wahome wrote and directed a politically themed drama depicting Africa’s movement from single-party rule to democratic governance.
The play was performed at Nyeri High School and reportedly attracted the attention of education authorities at a time when criticism of the political establishment was uncommon.
He later attended Kenyatta University.
Family
Wahome gives credit to his family for his upbringing, especially his father, who is an alumnus of the Alliance High School, in 1944.
In his personal life, Lawyer is married, and the couple has a daughter, Wambui, who studies at Alliance Girls High School, as well as other children whose details are not publicly known, with the youngest of the family being a son.
Among his children, Wahome has expressed that he is proud of his sons’ prosperity and growth as well as the achievement of his daughter academically.
Through his social media platform, Wahome often expresses his gratitude to his wife for her support to the family.
Wahome Thuku’s Career and Achievements
Thuku, though a trained teacher, started his professional career as a journalist.
According to Wahome, his first article was published in the Daily Nation in 1988 when he was still in school.
He, however, officially joined the media industry between 1997 and 1998, working with leading media organizations including The Standard, KTN, and Business Today.
As a court and political reporter, he covered some of Kenya’s legal and governance stories, detailing the country’s justice system and political environment.
Currently, Thuku is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

While Thuku has spent years analyzing politics from the outside, he has also expressed a desire to participate directly in leadership in Othaya Constituency.
He has yet to announce his bid for the parliamentary seat officially, despite endorsement from the members of the public on online platforms.
