Comedian and Script Writer Eddie Butita has responded to critics who called him out for not declaring his stand on the Finance Bill 2024.
Butita has been sparking the ire of Kenyans online for what they described as “failing to take a stand.”
The comedian said the Finance Bill is not okay and that he understands the frustration and disconnect many Kenyans feel with the current system.
“Recently, I have faced criticism for not publicly stating my position on the Finance Bill 2024. I want to address the issue directly and share the state of affairs surrounding my recent actions,” Butita wrote.
“All said and done, it is time to publicly make my position official. I Eddie Butita #RejectFinanceBill2024. It is time to listen. We cannot be all wrong. So, Gen Z, find for me a cool t-shirt to wear so that I can report to the office,” he said.

Eddie Butita Bows to Pressure
Butita stated that it is clear that the country needs a proper structure to ensure voices are heard and represented effectively.
“The Finance Bill, as it stands, is not okay. I played a role and submitted my concerns and will do it again when needed because I am a citizen and a businessman. I want the best for my countrymates, family, friends, and colleagues,” he added.
“Often, our leaders lose touch with those they represent. The results are what is happening currently. Over the years, I have shied away from making political stands, but I agree this is not a political moment, with my status, my silence is not warranted. It creases.”

On Saturday June 15 Butita said he had raised concerns about some issues on the Finance Bill expressing confidence that they would be addressed.
“As a responsible citizen, I have raised some issues on the Finance bill, especially touching on the creative economy,” he said.
“I have engaged both formally and informally and I am confident action will be taken. That said creatives are not opposed to paying taxes, we are just asking for a harmonized approach (sic).”

The comedian however faced backlash with some users condemning him for using the word ‘harmonize’ as a euphemism for ‘sell-out’ to agree with the #FinanceBill2024.
“Lord, look at how a free ride to the USA from Nairobi has changed your people. The real issue is the 1.5-million-dollar plane ride, and of course, #RejectFinanceBill2024,” a user George Tsitati said.
