Malava Constituency is one of the 12 electoral constituencies in Kakamega County, in western Kenya.
It was established in 1988 as part of boundary adjustments during the one-party era under the Kenya African National Union (KANU).
Malava falls under the Western Kenya political bloc and often aligns with opposition or coalition shifts rather than strict party loyalty.
After 1992, when pluralism in Kenyan politics was restored, Malava shifted from the Kenya African National Union (KANU) to opposition parties like FORD-Kenya, shifting to democratic systems and abandoning one-party rule.
It has historically been a battleground for Luhya sub-tribal influences, such as the Kabras and Maragoli communities, as well as national coalitions.

The death of Moses Malulu Injendi in February 2025 left the constituency’s seat in Parliament vacant, leading to a by-election scheduled for November 27, 2025.

During the 2022 general elections, Malava had 94,417 registered voters, according to the IEBC chart
The constituency is expected to head to the by-elections with over 94,000 registered voters ready to hit the ballot and choose Injendi’s successor, with many terming these by-elections as a litmus test for the forthcoming general elections in 2027.
Main parties for Malava’s By-elections
As it stands, there are two main political parties contesting to bag the parliamentary seat in Malava: the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Democratic Action Party – Kenya (DAP-K).

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate, Edgar Busiega, stepped down in favor of Seth Panyako to consolidate the opposition vote.
The Roots Party of Kenya is also represented by Caleb Sunguti, who later stepped down and pledged support for Ndakwa, the UDA Candidate.
The key candidates
David Ndakwa of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is endorsed by Luhya political heavyweights such as Moses Wetang’ula, Musalia Mudavadi, and Rashid Echesa.
On the other hand, Seth Panyako of the Democratic Action Party – Kenya (DAP-K) is the second main candidate, representing the united opposition, which falls under the Azimio coalition and is endorsed by prominent politicians like Kakamega Senator Bonnie Khalwale and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
