Thirteen people were arrested for malpractice during the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations at Nyamninia Secondary School in Gem Yala, Siaya County.
According to an OB report from Yala Police Station, the incident was reported by two Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) on November 11, 2024.
The two officials, namely Joseph Nyaga and John Okoth, were sent from KNEC HQ’s Nairobi, to conduct monitoring exercise for the ongoing KCSE exams.
While on the same exercise, they visited Nyamninia Sec School at around 10:15hrs about 3 kms west side of the station when the candidates were sitting Mathematics Paper 2.
On entering some exam room, they saw suspicious behaviors from the candidates prompting the team to find out what was going on.
On conducting thorough search on some candidates, they managed to come across some photocopied responses for the questions of the ongoing Mathematics paper.
The KNEC officials recovered four photocopies from one supervisor, namely Issac Wesonga and another one copy from the candidates.
According to the police, some candidates struggled to chew the papers while others hid them on private parts.
This, the police say showed that all candidates and contracted professionals colluded in the malpractice exercise.
The multi-agency team consisting of the sub county security team led by the DCC, sub county/county directors of education and the KNEC officials visited the school where the incident was established.
Among the people who have been arrested include the school principal Judy Maloba Wamochu (Center Manager) and her deputy Patrick Musungu Chamula.
The Supervisor was also arrested alongside Issac Santose Obago a Board of Management (BOM) teacher from St. Mary’s School Yala.
