14 KMTC Short Courses, Their Fees, Requirements, and Duration

The Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) Has Opened Applications To Nurses And Midwives Pursuing Advanced And Specialized Nursing Courses In Approved Training Institutions In Kenya.

Apart from offering diploma and certificate courses, the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) also offers short courses to individuals and corporations or tailor-made programs for organizations.

These courses range from HIV-related ones to mental health and therapy.

The duration, requirements, and fees for these courses vary depending on their depth and content.

Some courses take only a few days or weeks to complete, while others may span several months. The fees for these courses vary, starting as low as Ksh 16,000, with the highest costing Ksh 150,000.

These short courses include HIV Training and Counseling Services (HTS), Adherence Counseling, Echocardiography, Monitoring & Evaluation, and Integrated BLS/First Aid.

Other courses include Safe Phlebotomy, Point of Care Ultrasound for Nurses, Regional Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Management, and Upper Extremity Splinting in Occupational Therapy.

Additional courses offered are Community Mental Health, Sign Language for Health Workers, Basic Occupational Health and Safety, NCLEX-RNR, and Health Care Assistant.

List of KMTC Courses and Requirements

HIV Training and Counseling Services (HTS, accredited by the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP), prepares participants to offer comprehensive counselling services.

The course targets individuals interested in working in HIV/AIDS programs, with a minimum certificate in any health-related course.

Adherence Counseling equips participants with the knowledge and skills to motivate individuals living with HIV/AIDS to maintain their treatment and adhere to the guidelines provided.

The course is open to those with a certificate in HTS, health or social sciences, counseling, community health, and development.

Echocardiography helps learners acquire skills and competences in the generation and interpretation of images of the heart and blood vessels using ultrasound.

Those who qualify for this course are Radiographers, Doctors, Clinical officers and Nurses with a minimum Diploma and professional registration.

Point of Care Ultrasound deals with obtaining and interpreting ultrasound images to help with obstetrics care. Doctors, Nurses, and Clinical officers with a minimum Diploma and professional registration are eligible for the course.

Monitoring & Evaluation focus on equipping participants with the requisite competencies to design projects, ensure they are on track, evaluate progress, and demonstrate accountability.

Project officers, health information officers, and anyone involved in designing or monitoring interventions (minimum diploma) qualify for the course.

Regional Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Management focuses on performing regional blocks, managing acute pain and improving perioperative care while using point of care ultrasound.

Requirements include a higher Diploma in Anaesthesia (Clinical Medicine or Nursing)

Upper Extremity Splinting in Occupational Therapy focuses on managing injuries and conditions of the upper extremity through splinting. Practicing occupational therapists (minimum Diploma) qualify.

Courses Requiring KCSE Certificates

Safe Phlebotomy provides participants with the knowledge and skills to safely draw blood, handle equipment, and avoid occupational exposure.

Anyone interested in drawing blood for diagnostic purposes, with a minimum grade of D+ (plus) in KCSE, can pursue the course.

Integrated BLS/ First Aid deals with the prevention and management of life-threatening emergencies.

It targets drivers, police, security personnel, healthcare workers, caregivers & anyone who may be required to attend to emergency

Community Mental Health focuses on providing mental health ‘first aid,’ referring clients, and supporting recovery and community integration.

Community-based workers, Community Health promoters, and community gatekeepers with a minimum qualification of KCPE or the ability to read and write are eligible.

Sign Language for Health Workers prepares healthcare workers to communicate in sign language and assist the deaf in accessing healthcare.

Health workers interested in supporting the deaf with a minimum qualification for a certificate are eligible for the course.

The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RNR) reviews nursing content and test-taking strategies.

Health Care Assistant This course prepares trainees to provide hands-on care to patients/ clients in a variety of ways.

Individuals with a passion for patient care and have attained minimum D plain in KCSE or its equivalent.
