Registration of Political Parties

The registration of a political party in Kenya involves two stages: provisional registration followed by full registration.

To begin, an applicant convenes a founding members’ meeting to determine key party details, including the name, symbol, colours, and constitution. After this, a Ksh500 fee is paid to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to activate a name search on the ORPP portal.

The application must include signed minutes of the founding meeting, the party name (or abbreviation, if applicable), and a constitution that complies with legal requirements. Additionally, a request for symbol registration and adherence to the Code of Conduct must be submitted, along with the prescribed fee.

The Registrar examines the application and documents within 30 days to determine eligibility for provisional registration.

Upon approval, the applicant pays Ksh100,000 to receive a provisional registration certificate. A party must then apply for full registration within 180 days of provisional registration.

The full registration process requires a written application signed by an authorized party official, which is vetted under conditions set by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).
