Five universities and nine colleges across the country have been suspended by the Kenya Nutritionist and Dieticians Institute (KNDI) for offering unapproved courses.
In a notice on Thursday, December 5, KNDI stated that the said institutions are not approved to train nutrition and dietetics due to non-compliance with professional training standards as per section 6 (d) of Cap 253B.
“The public, parents and students are advised accordingly about the risk,” read the notice in part.
This suspension affects various programs, including degree, certificate, and diploma courses.
Universities and Colleges Suspended by KNDI
Among the affected institutions are the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT) and Karatina University, both offering degree programs.
Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) – Main Campus and Lukenya University have also been suspended from offering certificate, diploma, and degree programs.
Institutions that have been flagged for offering certificate and diploma courses in Nutrition and Dietetics are Lukenya University, The East African University, and Jodan College of Technology.

Also listed is JFC Munene College of Health Sciences, Kenya School for Integrated Medicine, Kenya Institute of Development Studies (KIDS), Laisamis Technical & Vocational College and Meru National Polytechnic.
Others include Northeastern National Polytechnic (NENAP), Sang’alo Institute of Science & Technology (Sanga’lo National Polytechnic), Thika School of Medical & Health Sciences in Kisumu, Mombasa and Kitui.
At the same time, KNDI stated that it has closed the same programmes in Meru University of Science and Technology (Degree), and Edinburgh college (certificate and Diploma).
Jordan Hospital Medical College and Kenya Institute of Social Works and Development both offering certificate and Diploma courses have also been closed.
Approved Institutions Approved to Offer Nutrition Courses
Meanwhile, the institute has approved 73 universities, colleges, and TVETs to offer the specified course.
Among the approved institutions are major universities like Kenyatta University, Maseno University, University of Nairobi (UoN), Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), and Kisii University.
Other universities on the list include Chuka University, Dedan Kimathi University (DeKUT), Egerton University, Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK), Gretsa University, Garissa University, and Mount Kenya University (MKU).

Additionally, Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), Kabarak University, Laikipia University, Maasai Mara University, Machakos University, Pwani University, University of Eldoret (UoE), and Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) are also included.
For TVETs and specialized colleges, the list features Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) and various national polytechnics such as Kabete, Kisumu, Kitale, Kisii, Kiambu, Kericho, and Sigalagala National Polytechnic.
Other notable institutions include Bumbe Technical Training Institute, Kenya Institute of Professional Studies (KIPS), Nairobi Women’s Hospital College, and the Kenya School of Medical Science and Technology.
