Kenyan actor and script writer Abel Mutua has clarified a past incident between him and Actress Sarah Hassan on high-school drama series ‘Tahidi High’ that had sparked uproar among Kenyans.
Mutua found himself in trouble after his confession of a scene where he kissed Hassan during their acting roles on Citizen TV‘s drama series ‘Tahidi High’ resurfaced online.
Drama unfolded after the video of Abel making the confession while being hosted on the Mic Cheque Podcast surfaced, with the actor sharing details of some of the memorable moments experienced while shooting the show.
The scriptwriter popularly known as ‘Mkurugenzi’ has however defended himself following the uproar, while explaining the exact details about the incident.
Speaking in an interview, Abel noted that the people who were bashing him after hearing what he said about Sarah Hassan did not understand the full context.
According to the actor popularly known as Mkurugenzi, the sentiments made in the podcast were in reference to the roles played in Tahidi High which people mistook for reality.

“The whole thing was a mistake by the people who spread the rumors. They did not watch the full podcast. It was not about Abel Mutua, Dennis Mugo and Sarah Hassan. It was about the characters played in Tahidi High that is OJ (Dennis), Freddie (Abel) and Tanya (Hassan),” explained Mutua.

The scriptwriter further explained that what led to the incident with Hassan was built on the basis that the Tahidi High audience back then vouched for a relationship between OJ and Tanya in the show and that they were against him being close to Tanya.
Mutua noted that it was a character war between him and Dennis Mugo in the show on who could win Tanya’s heart and had nothing to do with real life.
In addition, Mutua said that it is from the scriptwriting part that he decided to separate Tanya and OJ and as a scriptwriter, he added a kissing scene on the one of the last episodes of the show where he kissed Hassan.

When asked if he was attracted to Sarah Hassan back then, Abel pointed out that they used to treat each other like brothers and sisters and that there were no feelings involved.
“I wish you were there back then and witness how we used to operate like brothers and sisters. During our stay at Tahidi High there wasn’t any single relationship apart from the character relationships. Omosh and Mrs. Ngatia were the only characters who had a relationship outside the show, and they are married,” he added.
Mkurugenzi on being Bashed
At the same time, Abel downplayed the assumptions made by Kenyans online noting that they reacted as if what he was referring to was real life.
In his defense, Mutua argued that Daniel Mugo (OJ), Sarah Hassan (Tanya) and him were all in various relationships back then.
“All three of us were in real relationships. For me I had a wife and a 1-year child. OJ and Sarah Hassan were also in relationships. That’s how internet works. People pick things and spread misconceptions and get their views which make them happy,” added Mutua.
However, Mutua has maintained that the online trolls didn’t affect him negatively as his real fans know and understand what he meant in the podcast.
He also added that his fans have been encouraging him not to succumb to any rumors as they understand the context and that the trolls turned out to be of help to him.
“They helped me a lot. I have a show in Eldoret and when I woke up the next day after trending, I found tickets are selling so fast. This was amazing as I had not done any promotion,” he said.
