Students and staff at Chuka Technical and Vocational College are celebrating the ongoing affordable housing hostel project, describing it as a major milestone that will improve student welfare, practical training, and employment opportunities within the institution and the surrounding community.
Speaking during a project update, Deputy Principal in charge of Academics Irene Mureithi said the initiative has brought renewed hope to the college, especially for students who previously struggled to access accommodation near the institution.
According to the administration, the hostel project will provide an estimated 1,800-bed capacity, significantly easing the accommodation burden that has affected many trainees over the years.

“We are very grateful and happy that we are part of this initiative,” she said. “Our trainees will now have a conducive environment within the institution, and they will not have to look for alternative hostels far away.”
The project is also expected to strengthen technical training at the institution by giving students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience through practical exposure at the construction site.
The College officials noted that trainees pursuing courses under the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum require industrial exposure and real-life practical sessions as part of their studies.
The contractor will reportedly allow students to participate in practical learning activities at the site, enabling them to sharpen their technical skills while interacting with professionals in the construction industry.

Beyond improving student accommodation, the project is creating employment opportunities for local residents and youth within the community. Staff members say many residents have already benefited from jobs linked to the ongoing construction works.
College management has praised the government for supporting the initiative, terming it a transformative development that will not only improve learning conditions but also contribute to economic growth in the region.
Once complete, the hostel project is expected to position Chuka TVC as a more attractive and accessible institution for trainees seeking quality technical education in the country.
