African Gospel Music Emerges Ninth Most Streamed Genre in 2024

African gospel music has turned out to be a popular music genre in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Spotify Wrapped revealed that African gospel music ranked ninth on the list of most streamed genres in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2024, a position traditionally held by foreign gospel music.

The genre ranged from the vibrant choirs of South Africa to the Nigerian gospel artists, that have captivated listeners with soulful melodies and uplifting messages.

Spotify’s head of music in Sub-Saharan Africa Phiona Okumu stated that Spotify is pleased to provide a platform where artists share their faith and music with the world.

African Gospel music is undergoing a global resurgence

“African Gospel music is undergoing a global resurgence, inspiring millions and reshaping the global music landscape. We’re thrilled to be a platform that empowers these talented artists and choirs to share their faith and music with the world,” said Phiona.

The most streamed gospel artist in Sub-Saharan Africa was Maverick City followed by Nathaniel Bassey in second place and in third place was Joyous Celebration.

When it comes to the most streamed tracks, Sunmisola Agbebi’s B’Ola (Honour) emerged the most streamed followed by I Will Pray by Ebuka Songs, and in third place was Praise by Elevation Worship, Brandon Lake, Chris Brown, Chandler Moore.

The surge was attributed to several developments in the industry; the influence of the Afro-gospel sound, whereby the vibrant sound is reshaping worship experiences worldwide with its unique blend of African rhythms and contemporary gospel.

Gospel choirs like Joyous Celebration and Spirit of Praise from South Africa, and 1Spirit & Theophilus Sunday from Nigeria are redefining the boundaries of gospel music through their awe-inspiring performances, featuring exceptional vocals and groundbreaking arrangements.

According to Spotify, these performances have transcended cultural and geographical limitations, captivating audiences across the world.

The global recognition of African Gospel Music was further underscored by the inclusion of eight African artists, Nathaniel Bassey, Moses Bliss, Limoblaze, Joyous Celebration, Dunsin Oyekan, Spirit of Praise, Sunmisola Agbebi, and Mercy Chinwo, among the top 100 most-streamed gospel artists worldwide.
