Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has expressed concern over the declining standards and quality of service in Kenya’s hospitality industry, particularly at Utalii College in Nairobi.
During a recent visit to the institution on April 18, the CS observed that the college’s facilities were in a state of neglect and disrepair.
“He toured the college and hotel facilities, witnessing firsthand the state of disrepair and neglect that had befallen them,”
“Leaking roofs adorned the once vibrant restaurants, toilets stood silent in their dysfunction, and an overall air of neglect hung heavily in the atmosphere,” read the statement.
The CS pledged government support urging the board to compile a comprehensive cabinet memo outlining the necessary steps to restore Utalii College and Hotel to their former glory.
Mutua further emphasized the importance of Utalii College as a leading hospitality training institution and its role in setting an example for the industry.
“As a training institution, Utalii must lead by example. We cannot demand excellence from others while failing to uphold it ourselves,” stated the CS.

CS Mutua Reiterates the Need for Commitment to Excellence
The CS also highlighted the need for proactive management and a commitment to excellence, ensuring that Utalii’s training module evolves to meet international standards and equips graduates with the skills demanded by the global hospitality industry.
Furthermore, Mutua noted that international standards have risen, and that Kenya must rise to meet them if it wishes to thrive in the tourism sector.
He cautioned that neglecting quality could jeopardize the country’s reputation and future success.
“Management must address pressing issues promptly, recognizing that some solutions require more than just financial investment,” he added.
The CS was accompanied by Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa, and together they expressed their determination to support the revitalization of Utalii College.
“The journey ahead will be challenging, but with innovation, dedication, and collaborative effort, Utalii College and Hotel can once again shine as beacons of excellence in Kenya’s hospitality,” remarked the CS.
