The Farmers Party has announced its intention to leave the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

The party, in a letter dated Tuesday, April 8, and addressed to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition Secretariat through its Secretary General Simon Kamangu, issued a 30-day notice of intention to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, according to Clause 8 (termination) of the Coalition Agreement.

In the letter, Farmers Party accused the Alliance’s top leadership of “outright disregard for both the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and the spirit of our Coalition Agreement”, citing the formation of the broad-based government.

“We did so in good faith, with a shared vision of empowering our farmers, guaranteeing fair prices for their produce under MGR, and uplifting the living standards of ordinary Kenyans through a principled, people-centered economic transformation,” read the statement in part.

“Our belief in the binding commitments of the Coalition’s manifesto guided our participation.”

The Farmers Party alleged that the pact signed by President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and ODM of Raila Odinga was done without its consultation, despite being part of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

According to the party, the move not only violates the trust upon which the coalition was founded, but also undermines the principles of inclusivity, transparency, and mutual respect.

“The recent unilateral signing of a Broad-Based Government Agreement between the Kenya Kwanza Coalition and the ODM Party without consultation or involvement of the Kenya Kwanza constituent parties such as ours is the final confirmation of the political conmanship that has come to define the coalition,” the party noted.

“Therefore, Farmers Party hereby issues a thirty (30) day notice of intention to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, pursuant to Clause 8 (Termination) of the Coalition Agreement.”

Farmers party stated that the National Executive Committee of the Farmers Party met on April 7, 2025, and unanimously resolved the intention to exit the coalition.

The Farmers Party is currently headed by former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu.

The exit comes less than a month after the Democratic Party (DP) of Kenya, founded by the late President Mwai Kibaki, moved to sever ties with the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

DP also gave 30 days’ notice of its exit.

The party, which in the run-up to the last general election fronted sacked Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi as its presidential aspirant, stated in a letter dated March 7 that its continued stay within the Kenya Kwanza fold was no longer tenable.

“Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza coalition is no longer tenable due to the prevailing political developments,” the letter by DP Secretary General Jacob Haji read.

The letter was signed just a day before the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

The Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, confirmed receipt of a copy of the notification, making the DP the first party to exit the coalition since its inception in 2022.
