The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU)Secretary General Francis Atwoli has called for the recognition of Brian Mwenda as an Advocate in Kenya.
In a statement on Friday, October 13, Atwoli stated that Mwenda could be recognized under the principle of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Further, Atwoli stated that it was important to ensure inclusivity of professions in Kenya adding that Mwenda deserved a fair and transparent examination to test his knowledge.
“The case of Brian Njagi raises critical questions about the accessibility and inclusivity of professions in Kenya. If, indeed, it’s true that Brian has been practicing law and successfully representing clients in legal matters.
“We strongly advocate for a fair and transparent examination to test his knowledge, skills, and competencies in the field of law,” the statement read in part.
Atwoli Praises Mwenda’s Skills
At the same time, Atwoli expressed his strong support for the masquerading High Court advocate noting that he was able to practice the profession even without traditional qualifications.
The COTU secretary general described Mwenda as brilliant and competent young man.
“A young and brilliant Kenyan who has recently faced condemnation for practicing law without the traditional law qualifications.
“COTU (K) acknowledges that Kenya is home to a multitude of highly skilled and talented youth who have acquired their expertise through practical experience, self-study, and non-formal educational avenues,” added the statement.

Kenyan Hustlers and Unemployment
Moreover, Atwoli stated that there were many cases like Mwenda’s in Kenya where young skilled individuals failed to find jobs despite having impeccable abilities.
He added that many unemployed Kenyans did not have access to formal and traditional learning pathways and could make great engineers, accountants, social workers among other professions.
“These individuals, despite their outstanding abilities, often find themselves excluded from opportunities in the formal sector because the system typically prioritizes qualifications from traditional learning pathways.
“I can speak authoritatively that Brian’s case is not unique. I know of many great engineers, accountants, teachers, IT experts, cybersecurity experts, social workers. Creatives, footballers, farmers, immigrants, plumbers, carpenters, and paramedics who are specialists in their areas of interest yet without any paper to show their qualifications,” noted Atwoli.

COTU Pledges Support
In addition, the SG pledged to offer support to Mwenda to ensure he realized his dreams. According to him Mwenda did not have to go back to the classroom.
“While some of them persevere the pains of being in a classroom to be taught what they already know, the majority don’t and thus end up being discriminated against.
“COTU (K), would like to inform Brian Njagi that we are available and ready to support him to ensure that his dreams are actualized,” he added.
LSK Exposes Brian Mwenda
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Nairobi branch on October 13, issued a statement revealing that Mwenda was not an advocate of the High Court.
Further, LSK stated that Mwenda had been presenting himself as a member of the society duping unsuspecting Kenyans.
“The Branch wishes to notify all members of the society and of the public that Brian Mwenda Njagi is not an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, from the Society’s records, nor is he a member of the Branch,” stated LSK.
