Autopsy Reveals What Killed Man in Police Cells 30 Minutes After Arrest

An autopsy report has revealed the cause of death of a man who was pronounced dead thirty minutes after being booked at a police post in Kiambu County.

Samuel Kimamo Muchemi was locked up at the Muchatha Police Post in Kiambu County on the night of December 12, 2024. He was later pronounced dead the following morning, with a police report indicating that he died by suicide.

A postmortem report has now revealed that Kimamo died as a result of cardiorespiratory failure due to neck compression, as a result of strangulation. The report also indicated that there were no clear signs of suspension or hanging.

The family of the deceased has dismissed the suicide claim saying that their kin would not commit suicide after being arrested for being drunk driving. They are now seeking answers from the law enforcers.

“What we want is justice, and we want to know the truth about what happened. We want to know what transpired during the period between his arrest and being booked at the cell,” said Daniel Maina, a brother to the deceased.

Police have distanced themselves from the matter

The police have however distanced themselves from the incident. They have committed to offering support and information on the issue that has since been taken up by the police oversight authority-Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

Kiambaa Sub County Commander Pius Mwanthi while commenting on the matter stated that IPOA and DCI have taken over the matter and asked members of the public to be patient with them.

“The policing independent authority IPOA has taken over the matter jointly with the officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and I just urge members of the public to allow us what is required of us,” said Mwanthi.
