Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense has strongly condemned the Iranian armed forces’ attacks on the autonomous Nakhchivan exclave.
According to a statement by the Azerbaijan Ministry of Defense dated March 5, the attacks were carried out by the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Iranian forces attacked from their territory using uncrewed aerial vehicles against Nakhchivan International Airport and other civilian infrastructure in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan.
During the attack, two civilians were injured during the evacuation process. Details regarding the drones used in the attacks are still under investigation.
“The technical specifications of the drones and details of these attacks are currently under investigation,” the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan told the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC).
According to the Ministry of Defence, Iran’s attack targeting civilian infrastructure had no military necessity.
As a response to the Iranian attack, the Ministry of Defense stated that it is taking all the necessary precautions and measures to defend its territory.
“Full responsibility for the incident lies entirely with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan is preparing the necessary response measures to defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country and to ensure the security of civilians and civilian infrastructure. These attacks will not go unanswered,” the statement read.
The attack marked the first direct Iran-attributed attack on Azerbaijani territory in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
The drone attacks in Nakhchivan come amid reports of more Iranian drones targeting countries across the region, including a US military base near Baghdad international airport in Iraq.

Iran’s opposition in Nakhchivan in Azerbaijan
Nakhchivan borders Iran and Türkiye and was part of the US-brokered peace deal signed in 2025 between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The deal gave the US development rights for the proposed route connecting Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave and creating a passage between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Iran opposed the planned transit route with claims that it would bring potential foreign forces close to Iran’s borders.
Additionally, the Iranian government accused the Azeri government of turning Azerbaijan into a base for Israeli spies.

Iran drone Attacks
Iran has launched a fresh barrage of missiles toward Israel, according to the Israeli military.
In addition, the Iranian forces continued their attack on the United States military base near Baghdad International Airport and US assets in Arab countries.
However, the drone attempted attack targeting Victoria airbase on Wednesday was intercepted before hitting the target.
The Saudi Ministry of Defence said the latest drone sent into its territory was shot down near the al-Jawf region, in the north of the country.
