The Ministry of Education has disqualified Butere Boys Secondary School from the 2026 Western Region Secondary Schools Games and referred the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after investigations found that the school fielded two ineligible players during the Kakamega County football championships.
In a letter dated July 2 addressed to the school’s principal, Kakamega County Director of Education Stephen Abere said the decision followed a formal appeal by Kakamega School, which challenged the eligibility of players used by Butere Boys during the county games.
“This office notes with gratitude your participation in this years’ Term 2 Kakamega County Sports Championship; specifically, the football discipline. As you are aware, a complaint was made against your team by Kakamega School,” part of the letter read.
Butere Boys Face DCI Probe After Football Eligibility Violation
According to the letter, the investigation was conducted under Article 14(f) of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Constitution and Section 66(3)(a) and (c) of the Basic Education Act, 2013.

Abere said Butere Boys was given an opportunity to respond to the allegations before a final decision was reached.
The investigation established that two players, Moses Mwawara Mwaruwa and Collins Luvisia, were ineligible to participate in the competition.
The Ministry found that the school had violated Article 14(e) of the KSSSA Constitution, resulting in its disqualification from representing Kakamega County at the 2026 Western Region Championships. The case has also been escalated to the DCI for further investigation.
“The import of the outcome of the investigation is that your team violated Article 14(e) of the KSSSA Constitution and accordingly will not represent Kakamega County in the 2026 Western Region Sports Championship. Further note that the matter is being escalated to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) for further action,” stated the letter.
Kakamega School’s Appeal Leads to Butere Boys’ Disqualification
The decision follows an appeal lodged by Kakamega School after the Kakamega County football finals, in which the school challenged the eligibility of several players fielded by Butere Boys.

In the petition, Kakamega School raised concerns over six players, alleging violations related to age eligibility, player registration, transfers and class repetition.
After reviewing the complaint, the County Director of Education found that only two players were ineligible to participate in the competition.
The outcome of the case has now reshaped Kakamega County’s representation at the regional championships.
Musingu High School, which finished second in the county competition, has been crowned county champions and will now represent Kakamega as the top seed.
Meanwhile, Kakamega School, which secured third place after beating Tande Secondary School in the playoff, has earned the county’s second qualification slot following Butere Boys’ disqualification.
The 2026 Western Region Secondary Schools Games will be staged in Bungoma from July 8 to July 11.
Under the revised draw, Musingu High School will play in Pool A, where they are set to face Mbale High School from Vihiga, Kibabii High School from Bungoma and Nambale High School from Busia.
Kakamega School has been drawn in Pool B and will take on Bukembe Secondary School of Bungoma, Emusire High School of Vihiga and St. Anthony’s Kolanya from Busia.
