The family of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has urged Kenyans not to tarnish his legacy.
In a media interview, his brother expressed disappointment over negative remarks being made about Chebukati’s character.

“It is very unfortunate that people are speaking ill of Chebukati. For us as a family, it is painful that we have lost him, and it hurts even more when we see character assassination because we know the kind of person he was,” he said.
Furthermore, the family member insisted that Chebukati was innocent and was being unfairly blamed for sins he never committed.

“I really wish to tell Kenyans, myself included, that the man they are crucifying, the person we are condemning, is being blamed for things he never did. We are crucifying someone who was as clean as snow,” he stated.
Family of Chebukati Says Kenyans Are Unfairly Criticizing Him
The former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson’s brother described him as a man who upheld integrity in everything he did.

He revealed that even when family members sought his help to secure jobs at IEBC, he refused, insisting that everything should follow due process.
“I can tell you for free, he left without ever influencing the government to help any of us get jobs,” Wafula’s brother said.

His remarks come in response to criticism from a section of Kenyans on social media regarding Chebukati’s leadership at IEBC.
Social media user Soko Analyst posted, “In African wisdom, a proverb states, ‘A man who uses his wealth to wrong others will come to the grave with nothing but the weight of his sins.’”

Another user, Francis Gaitho, wrote, “Just in case you’re tempted to feel sorry for Wafula Chebukati, remember that the mess we are in today is because of him.”
Several Kenyans also shared videos of the chaotic events that transpired at the BOMAS of Kenya hall before President Ruto was announced as the winner of the 2022 general elections.

However, various leaders, including President William Ruto, have praised Chebukati, describing him as a man of integrity and principles.
“Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country,” President Ruto condoled.
Murang’a Governor also paid tribute, saying, “Chebukati was a gallant Kenyan who stood for what was right. He respected the Constitution and will always be remembered for his calm demeanor and composed character.”
